Resort to Chic

Vacation or no vacation, resort wear is making a big splash in the summer fashion scene. Considered chic and comfortable, from a strictly holiday affair, it has graduated to an everyday wear. So, while the Hawaiian dresses, shorts and bikinis stay intact, there’s room for some fuss-free evening wear too. Alexander Wang, Burberry Prorsum, Diane Von Furstenberg, Emilio Pucci, Stella McCartney, Erdem Moralioglu and Prabal Gurung, all took a fancy for cruise wear. Stella has taken a classic course with wearable Hawaiian prints, deck-chair stripes, seersucker, jacquard houndstooth and punchy shades. Erdem has grabbed attention with stunning prints, tweeds, a little bit of lace, and contrasting shades.  Kapil and Monika have let innovations have a field day with their resort wear line. The designers say, “The chic palette evolves from a tropical holiday to contemporary party wear. We have blended craftsmanship with extreme line silhouettes, kick pleats, thread drill and pearls to daisies on the reverse side of fabric. As for the choices, you can pick mid-calf length kaftans, skirts, tail coats, mini capes, boleros, tops, tunics, sheer blouses, long shirting tops, wide-leg trousers, high-waist trousers, gowns and jumpsuits. The collection also includes gauzy separates that are floaty and ladylike. While edgy cuts highlight the uber-stylish mood, the embroidery remains subtle, studded with beads and pearls. The hues vary from cool summer shades of ecru, eggshell, rose dust pink, baby pink, beige, icy grey to bright mustard, coral orange, royal blue, and scarlet red. Riding high on versatility, each outfit can easily make the transition from day wear to evening wear.” “Resort wear usually makes the aqua connect with a dash of blue and white. So turquoise, cobalt or azure, ocean-like shades are the natural choices. A glimpse of sunshine yellow is more than welcome. The mantra is ‘style with ease’ so unstructured clothes, wide cotton trousers, kaftans, tunics, free flow skirts come as classic resort wear. Scout for the right fabric and linen instantly comes to mind. It can have good tuning with chiffon, cotton and soft lycra,” suggests Kiran Uttam Ghosh.
