By Daniel Cinna, Melbourne has retained its place as the best city in the world to live in, according to a league table of cities with the best living conditions. The Economist Intelligence Unit survey ranks a list of 140 cities on factors such as healthcare, education and infrastructure. St Petersburg is ranked joint 67th overall, while Moscow is 70th. In the UK Manchester dropped nine places from last year to 51st - while London fell two places to 55th - with the summer riots of 2011 cited as responsible for their drop down the
table. VOR’s Daniel Cinna spoke to Jon Copestake, the editor of the survey, and asked him what surprises the table had thrown up. We saw Adelaide move into the top five and overtake Sydney. That’s probably because of effective improvements in infrastructure. In terms of the surprises – we expected London and Manchester be higher on the list. And obviously there’s surprise with Damascus in Syria. The city hasn’t dropped further, probably will do soonWhat criteria do you use to compile this ranking? Obviously you have main rankings of overall livability, stability heath care, cultural environment, education and infrastructure?
