Fashion Industry Eyes Alternative Leather Made Out of Cactus–And it’s Sustainable and Eco-Friendly

Two men have succeeded in developing an alternative to animal leather made out of Mexican cactus—and it could save millions of animals worldwide.

Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez created their vegan fabric out of the nopal cactus and spent two years researching and developing their design. They then perfected the manufacturing process in July and unveiled the fabric to the fashion world in Milan, Italy in October.

The entrepreneurs realized the environmental impact of animal leather spending years working in the furniture, automotive, and fashion industries. Upon quitting their jobs, they co-founded Adriano Di Marti to find an innovative leather replacement.

Their patented “Desserto” fabric is made out of cactus leaves that are sustainably harvested every 6 to 8 months. The material is designed to breathe easily while still being durable and partially biodegradable. In addition to the cactus-based material requiring a minimal amount of water to develop, it is grown organically in the Mexican state of Zacatecas.
The material, which is available in a variety of colors produced using natural dyes, has now been used to make everything from bags and automotive seating to shoes and jackets. Fashion Industry Eyes Alternative Leather Made Out of Cactus–And it’s Sustainable and Eco-Friendly

Nagaland's fashion designer, Bambi Kevichusa was recently honoured at the prestigious 3rd edition of the Aalekh Foundation Women Achievers' Awards held in New Delhi on July 19.

Nagaland’s Bambi Kevichusa was recently honoured at the prestigious 3rd edition of the Aalekh Foundation Women Achievers' Awards held in New Delhi on July 19 last. She was among 20 distinguished women from across India recognised for their pioneering contributions and transformative impact. The renowned Naga fashion designer was specifically recognised for ‘sustainability and style from Northeast India,’ with the foundation highlighting her couture bridal creations and her commitment to sustainable, Naga-rooted design. Through her label ‘Bambi K’ and her concept store Windfall in Dimapur, she champions eco-friendly fashion grounded in cultural identity.

Her work has garnered international recognition, having represented Northeast India at events in Istanbul, Paris, Hanoi, and New Delhi, and has been featured in the Horniman Museum, London. Beyond her contributions to fashion, Bambi is also actively involved in environmental initiatives as a volunteer with Team Better Dimapur and is known for her creative pursuits in music.

The Aalekh Foundation, a cultural and social impact organisation dedicated to heritage, sustainability, and women’s empowerment, institutes these annual awards to honour outstanding women from various fields such as the arts, public service, media, law, literature, entrepreneurship, education, and social impact. These awards celebrate women who are not only trailblazers in their respective fields but also catalysts for positive change, demonstrating exceptional courage, leadership, and commitment to shaping a more inclusive and empowered society.

The Aalekh Foundation lauded Bambi on their Instagram, stating, “Meet our Woman Achiever—Tirelessly bold, boundlessly creative, and rooted in purpose Bambi is one among the 20 remarkable women being honoured at the Aalekh Foundation Woman Achiever's Award-3rd Edition.”

They emphasised her role as a fierce advocate for sustainable fashion, noting that she has redefined style as a medium of conscious living and cultural pride. Her work challenges fast fashion norms and promotes mindful choices by elevating indigenous textiles, ethical processes, and zero-waste design into a bold, contemporary aesthetic. The Foundation remarked that her journey is one of fearless reinvention, where art meets activism, and self-expression meets sustainability, honouring her for the movement she leads with style, soul, and substance.

In an interview with The Morung Express, Bambi expressed that receiving the award has been a validation for the work that she does, not so much as a designer but a designer who has embarked on an almost solo journey to show the world how the Naga fabric, weaves, artistic and cultural inheritance can be made into clothes that can be marketed and worn by the modern world.

She shared that it has also personally and professionally validated her belief in her role as a designer to contribute to keeping the planet safe for ‘our children.’
Reflecting on the challenges, Bambi admitted it has been a lonely journey as an artist in many ways, especially in exploring Naga textiles for clothing, even as she added, “And a very expensive journey too.”

“This award for me has meant that someone out there has noticed the work that I am doing and is applauding me for it. So while I am humbled by the recognition, I am also inspired by it; inspired to keep going and not giving up on what I believe in,” she stated.Dr Rennie Joyy, Founder, Aalekh Foundation had commented on the awards during the event, stating, “We have continued to spotlight the role of women as carriers of tradition, creators of beauty, and changemakers in both visible and invisible ways. Fashion Designer Makes Shoes that Grow into Apple Trees, Instead of Growing Landfills

Johnny Footwear

The legend of Johnny Appleseed: the man who walked about Ontario and the northern United States spreading apple pips, takes root in a new pair of kicks that biodegrade and grow an apple tree when they are discarded.

Tackling plastic pollution is the principle purpose behind the new shoe, but they also help the environment a little bit by aiding in reforestation.

33-year-old Toronto resident Luc Houle is working to bring “Johnny,” the brand name of the shoe, to market through Kickstarter, which is currently just $1,000 shy of his $55,000 target.

Johnnys are simple canvas everyday shoes made without plastic, utilizing Fair Trade biodegradable materials instead.

Cushiony, lightweight, and water-resistant, Johnnys won’t biodegrade off of your feet, but after the years wear then down and the decision to move on to new kicks arrives, they can be buried, as hidden within the sole is an apple seed encased in fertilizer.

The materials which the shoe is made from contain naturally-occurring compounds which attract microorganisms to feed on and break down the shoe over three years.

Even if you don’t get around to burying them, they will still biodegrade if thrown in a landfill.
Johnny Footwear

When the campaign is successful ($109 will get you a pair and a tree planted in your name), Houle hopes to have them available to a wide range of people by August of next year.

The nice thing about this project is that because it’s a biodegradable sneaker that grows into a tree, we can kind of help number one, offset people’s carbon footprint, but we’re also helping eliminate plastics,” Houle told Blog Toronto. “And the more people we can reach with that the more of an impact we can have.” Fashion Designer Makes Shoes that Grow into Apple Trees, Instead of Growing Landfills

Fashion Student Makes ‘Memory Bears’ for Grieving Folks From the Clothing Of Their Deceased Loved Ones

A crafty Scottish woman has come up with the sweetest way for people to keep meaningful mementos of their loved ones.

For the last six years, Mary Macinnes has been making people “Memory Bears” out of the favorite clothing of their deceased friends and family.

Macinnes, who studied fashion technology at Herriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, says that she made her first memory bear for a friend when she was just 16 years old. She quickly became flooded with people’s requests for their own Memory Bear, but she always turned them down because she wanted to focus on her studies.

After her bears became more and more popular on social media, however, she eventually opted to start making the bears full-time.

Now 21 years old, Macinnes has made hundreds of Memory Bears, each of which costs £50 ($65) and requires 5 to 6 hours of planning and crafting.

Macinnes has crafted bears that include the ashes of the loved one, as well as jewelry. She even adds pockets to the backs of the stuffed animals so the recipients can stash special letters and mementos with their bear.

The bears have become so popular, Macinnes says that she currently maintains a months-long waiting list.

Although working with such emotional materials may not always be the easiest line of work, Macinnes says that her job has also been infinitely rewarding.

“I really enjoy meeting my customers when they collect bears—80% burst into tears,” she told Metro. “I think that’s because garments arrive as sad reminders of the past then it’s almost as if new life is breathed into them. They become something that’s much more acceptable to cuddle and talk to, and the feedback is they definitely can help the grieving process.”

If you want to check out more of Macinnes’s Memory Bears, feel free to visit her Facebook page.

Kanili Kiho, Dimapur, Nagaland’s traditional weaves and eco-friendly textiles made their mark on the global stage once again, at the 19th edition of the ‘Celebrating North East India Festival’ in Istanbul, Turkey. Naga fashion designer, Bambi Kevichusa captured the audience’s interest with her collection of eco-friendly textiles, traditional weaves, and designs, bringing the state’s rich cultural heritage into the spotlight.Naga designer, Bambi Kevichusa with the models at the 19th edition of the ‘Celebrating North East India Festival’ in Istanbul, Türkiye on September 6. Kevichusa was one of 54 prominent participants from Northeast India at this landmark event organised by the North East Institute of Fashion Technology (NEIFT). Over the years, the festival has displayed the region’s heritage in global locations like Washington, DC, and Milan, Italy, and it continued this legacy in Istanbul this year.

The event was held in collaboration with the Consulate General of India in Istanbul and received support from the Indian Ministry of Textiles and various state governments from Northeast India, promoting the region’s tourism, textiles, and handicrafts sector to an international audience.

In a recent interview with The Morung Express, Kevichusa reflected on her experience, sharing her insights into eco-fashion and her passion for all things ‘Nagas.’

“It has been a wonderful experience and a privilege to represent ‘our people’ in a foreign country,” she says, now back with fond memories and inspired by the warmth of the Turkish people.

Her collection showcased timeless pieces made from sustainable, organic, and locally produced textiles from Nagaland. “While we are used to our own culture and fabrics, for them, it was something entirely new.”

“Being overjoyed is an understatement,” she adds, describing the enthusiastic response from both the public and the diplomatic fraternity. She incorporated Naga music into the fashion show, featuring the song Warrior’s Call by Colored Keys.

With over a decade in fashion, Kevichusa’s work has reached audiences in Hanoi, Vietnam, Paris, and across India, most recently at The Couture Chronicles in New Delhi on October 27, organised by Anant Samagam at Travancore Palace.

Despite her experience, the celebrated designer approaches each show not knowing how it would be received. “All I know is that I give my best effort. Sometimes I feel I could have done more, but I strive to the best of my ability and go ahead with it, really not knowing what to expect.”

Step toward eco-friendly textiles: Kevichusa’s commitment to pursue eco-friendly textiles stems from a concern for the planet. “The inspiration comes from the burden of seeing climate change affect our land and the world around us,” she says. “And really, it is for my son,” she continues. “I have a 16-year-old, and I want to keep this planet safe for his generation and the next.”

It also stems from her love for Naga traditional textiles which are naturally eco-friendly, as she observes that the Naga tradition is “much more advanced” in sustainability.

In this light, she says that to address climate change, “we need to go back to our roots,” especially as the planet faces environmental devastation. “I can’t just sit still and do nothing, so this is my humble way of contributing.”

Kevichusa pointed out that the fashion industry is one of the biggest contributors to environmental harm. “As designers, we have a responsibility, each one of us.” The fast-paced production cycles, synthetic dyes, petroleum-based fabrics, and plastic-based textiles—all are detrimental to the environment.

She emphasised the need for designers to carefully examine the materials they use. “We need to go back to using recycled or natural fibres and eco-friendly dyes. This is our contribution to stopping the damaging effects of climate change.”
Whenever the bridal designer exhibits her work outside Nagaland, she takes the opportunity seriously. “The Nagas have something unique to give to the world, and I want people to know more about us.” So, Kevichusa makes sure that she showcases only Naga textiles and rich motifs rather than her bridal designs, representing the Naga people through clothing and fashion.

Reflecting on her recent experience in Turkey, she recalls, “I was all by myself, even though the consul general is also Naga. I felt a big responsibility to represent our culture and people in a positive light.”

Sustainable fashion has future, though with challenge
Kevichusa believes that sustainable fashion has a promising future in Nagaland. “Our roots, our textiles, our colours are eco-friendly. This is something unique we can offer the world.”
However, one major challenge she faces is sourcing organic textiles. “It’s difficult to find weavers who work with organic textiles, because everybody is caught up with their own work,” she explains.

Finding these yarns remains a challenge, and there is limited handloom fabric, even as she admits that there have been many times when she felt like giving up. According to her, the local textiles made from loin and backstrap loom are not as durable for making clothes, so she uses fly shuttle loom fabrics. However, only a few weavers are producing these fabrics in eco-friendly fibres like silk and cotton, posing a hurdle for eco-friendly practices.

Focus on originality, positive aspects: For aspiring designers aiming to make an impact, Kevichusa stresses the importance of originality. “Everyone has something unique to give to the world. You don’t need to copy others to make a mark, locally or globally. Be original, work consistently, and keep showing up. It is always a lot of hard work and sacrifices along the way, but if you’re good in your work, people will eventually find you.”

She urges Nagas to value their heritage and focus on the positive aspects of their culture. “We have so much artistic heritage and treasure within us,” she says, “and that is our unique gift to the world—not just in fashion, but in every sense as a people.”“I think we often look at ourselves and say, ‘Oh we Nagas are like this and like that,’ speaking negatively about ourselves. We need to stop this. Instead, let’s start focusing on the positive things, pick those, and share them with the world.” Bringing Nagaland’s traditional, eco-friendly weaves to global stage | MorungExpress | morungexpress.com
