Love is good for health

By Cena, Although it sounds funny or weird, studies and experiments have demonstrated a closerelationship between health and love. It has been shown that the bonds offriendship, love and affection, enhance health and happiness. Some of the benefits of love on health are: improving attention, motivation and memory. There is a significant reduction in anxiety, stress and depression. Strengthens the immune system, dispels wrinkles and low levels of hypertension. Here are some findings that relate to health and love:

  • (1) Strengthens the immune system. Biochemical reactions experienced by the body of a person when being in love help improve health and help to "strengthen the immune system," according to experts. With love our quality of life is better and tend to get sick less, and that negative feelings are outweighed by the positive and our body works better.

"The hormones, the nervous system and skin, forming a narrow triangle, so the separation of estrogen in women improves hair, nails, skin," says Sandro Tucto dermatologist.
  • (7) Fewer doctor visits. Another study found that couples who have spent more time together, make fewer doctor visits. The psychiatrist Enrique Galli said that "stable relationships get colds less than singles, while elderly couples suffer less pain than the lonely elderly. This is due to segregation of hormones that allow for greater resistance to pain. "
  • (8) Making love, health benefits. Keeping sexually active and safe, influences our physical and emotional state is very important to our overall health. Five Ways to Move Beyond the Monster of Self-Doubt and Pursue Your Passion

Photo by Daniel Martinez For Unsplash+

I don’t know the first thing about NFL football, but I have no trouble relating to Buffalo Bills running back Ty Johnson’s struggle to overcome bouts of crippling self-doubt.

A few years back, Johnson was dropping balls and questioning his abilities at every turn.

“There was a lot of things as a player I was experiencing, and you know it makes you question yourself as a player,” Johnson told WKBW news reporter Michael Schwartz a few days before the Bills trounced my hometown team, the Ravens.

Johnson then posed a question that’s plagued us all, at one point or another: “Do I deserve to be here?”

Fortunately, Johnson found a way toward, as he put it, “having positivity” by writing affirmations like I’m great or Be present on his wrist before every game.

This solution might not work for everyone, but it’s clearly helped Johnson to put doubt in its place so that it no longer dominates his every waking moment.

We should all be so lucky. Living with doubt breeds a lot of uncertainty, as we postpone decisions and plans, not sure how they’ll turn out. Furthermore, as mental health professionals have long known, self-doubt often leads to a vicious cycle involving anxiety, procrastination, low self-esteem, and depression.

The good news? We have the power to turn this around—to go from doubtful to purposeful.

“Uncertainty is a foundation of creativity,” Maggie Jackson, author of Uncertain: The Wisdom and Wonder of Being Unsure, told me recently.

My own lifelong strides with doubt led me to conversations with doubters around the world—from artists to entrepreneurs. And I’ve come up with five strategies every self-doubter can adopt to shift their mindset toward feeling motivated and more self-confident.

1) Change the channel. Competing inner voices clamor in our heads for attention. Your “doubt monster” may be among the loudest and most persistent—but it’s not the only voice. Acknowledge the fear and insecurity. Then invite your self-affirming voices to speak up: Look at what I’ve already accomplished! Put the positive voices on repeat—and even try saying them out loud in the mirror each morning. You’ll be surprised at how changing the channel will alter your perspective.

2) Focus on your ‘why.’ When the jitters kick in, take a beat and remind yourself why you’re doing the work you do in the first place. Whether you’re a major league athlete or an entrepreneur embarking on a new start-up, you’re going all-in on something you love, something that lights you up and gets you out of bed in the morning. Your ‘why’ holds the key to driving your passion forward. Any doubts you feel are worth the price—and it’s not their job to slow your roll.

3) Put your doubts to good use. Doubt can be a force for good. Think of the surgeon who pauses before cutting into a patient. Doubt focuses your attention. Your doubts are not telling you “no,” they’re telling you where to sharpen and apply your skill, talent, and intellect so as to achieve your goal. This is a classic “yes-and” strategy: acknowledging doubt’s downside while harnessing its upside.

4) Gather the right allies. Anytime you take a big creative risk, friends and family will question your motives and possibly your sanity. You cannot comfortably make big moves surrounded by doubters who exacerbate your doubts. Instead, expand your networks to identify more allies—people and institutions that will back you and encourage you every step of the way. Dial down the adversaries and dial up the allies.

5) Renegotiate your relationship to risk and reward. Our culture prizes efficiency and a fast return on investment. But anytime you set an ambitious plan in motion, doubt quickly kicks in when conventional measures of success, whether profit or external validation, do not materialize. Try uncoupling risks from traditional rewards. Start-up companies and novelists often fail many times before succeeding. The time and effort invested in your passion project or career is intrinsically valuable; productivity and accolades are not the only—or even the best—measures of a worthy pursuit.

Doubt is a trickster, often masquerading as fear and lack of confidence. It wields enormous and sometimes undetected influence on how we make decisions. All the more reason to take stock of your self-doubts and ask whether they are serving you or holding you back.

Never forget that at every stage of life, we retain the capacity to change in ways that give our lives meaning and show us we have not yet finished becoming who we really are. There is room to grow and discover. Chances are, you’re still well on the way to finding that out for yourself. Don’t let self-doubt hold you back.Amy L. Bernstein is the author, most recently, of Wrangling the Doubt Monster: Fighting Fears, Finding Inspiration, an inspirational book for self-doubting creatives. She is an award-winning novelist, a former journalist, and a certified nonfiction book coach helping authors find their best path to publishing. She also teaches workshops and brings an empowering message to conferences and podcasts around the world. Five Ways to Move Beyond the Monster of Self-Doubt and Pursue Your Passion:

Making Space for love, kindness and understanding

New Delhi, (IANSlife) No matter what, we all deserve to be loved and valued. Make sure to take the time this year, whether you're single or in a relationship, to express your love in unique ways.

Spend some time expressing your love and gratitude to those around you. Making breakfast in bed for your loved ones can be as simple as delivering a handwritten message. Relationships can be strengthened significantly by demonstrating care.

Reach out to loved ones; whether it be through a phone call, text message, or a handwritten note, spend some time to let them know that you are thinking of them and value them. Give the people you care about the gift of time, connection, empathy, compassion, and a safe place to be vulnerable.

Dr Chandni Tugnait, a Psychotherapist, Life & Business Coach, & Founder-Director of Gateway of Healing, shares 14 ways to help you create meaningful memories:

Have a spa day: Treat yourself and your loved one to a relaxing spa day, complete with massages, facials, and other pampering treatments.

Plant a tree: Plant a tree together in honour of your relationship or friendship. This can symbolise growth and remind you of the love you share.

Do a puzzle: Working on a jigsaw puzzle helps enjoy each other's company and boosts the satisfaction of completing a task as a team.

Have a photography session: Have a professional photography session together or take candid photos of each other throughout the day.

Go stargazing: Find a secluded spot away from city lights and spend the evening stargazing and discussing your hopes and dreams for the future.

Write a song: Write a song together, either from scratch or by remixing a favourite song to make it your own.

Plan a scavenger hunt: Create a scavenger hunt for your partner or friends, leading them to different locations with unique gifts and special memories.

Create a care package: Put together a care package for someone you love, including their favourite treats, a cosy blanket, and a handwritten note.

Create a memory book: Collect photos, mementoes, and memories from your relationship or friendship and create a memory book that you can look back on for years to come.

Have a movie marathon: Choose a selection of your favourite romantic comedies or heart-warming films and spend the day with your loved ones.

Play games: Play games together, such as board games, card games, or video games. This can be a fun and playful way to spend time together.

Make handmade gifts: Create handmade gifts for each other, such as a painting, a photo album, or a knitted scarf.

Take a dance class: Sign up for a class together and learn how to salsa, tango, or swing dance.

Perform acts of kindness: Plan a day of random acts of kindness, such as leaving positive notes for strangers, paying for someone's coffee, or donating to a charity.Dr. Chandni Tugnait suggests celebrating everyone who brings happiness and joy into your life - friends or neighbours who have been by your side during tough times or family members who keep filling your life with laughter. Remember to be kind to yourself too! Give yourself the same amount of love and kindness that you give others, and don't put yourself last on the list constantly. Treat yourself well - it'll make all the difference! Making Space for love, kindness and understanding | MorungExpress | morungexpress.com

What inspires one to donate blood?

“What makes me to donate blood? I donate blood because it is life, it is lifesaving,” commented Shambhalang Lyngdoh Marshiliang, a 20 year-old Catholic novice preparing to become a ‘Brother.’

According to him, countless people across the world struggle to get life-saving blood transfusion on account of insufficient medical facilities or financial constraints. “I encourage others to join me in this lifesaving endeavor, as together, we can make a difference and ensure that no one suffers unnecessarily due to a lack of blood,” he said.

Marshiliang was one among voluntary donors, who donated blood at a donation camp, in the Salesian College of Higher Education, Dimapur, organised in collaboration with the Blood Bank, Dimapur District Hospital and Nagaland State Blood Transfusion Council on the occasion of the World Blood Donor Day, June 14. Share Life, Give Blood is the theme for 2024.

Donation camps ran simultaneously at the Unity College and Blood Bank. The camp at the Blood Bank was in collaboration with the Human Rights Help Association Nagaland. Dr Temsu Jamir, Consultant and Incharge of the Blood Bank, District Hospital, Dimapur, informed that frequent donors voluntarily turned up as well.

In his keynote address at the Salesian College, Dr Jamir likened June 14 to a global celebration to honour the people who voluntarily donate blood “to save lives without expecting anything in return.” He described blood donors as enlightened, motivated and empathetic.

While the day is generally marked by voluntary donation, he reminded that the greater objective has been to create wider awareness on the importance of blood donation and encouraging more people to come forward. “Save others life today, others will save you tomorrow,” he appealed.

“Our dream is safe and ready blood waiting for patients from all parts of Nagaland and, maybe, even from beyond,” he said, adding that making available safe blood is everybody’s responsibility. According to him, everyone should participate and take ownership. He said that the Blood Bank is for anyone in need.

A total of 80 units were collected at the three donation camps, today. From January to May 31, 2024, the Blood Bank has recorded a collection of 3845 units. In 2023, the total collection was 15,803 units, the highest in a year to date. The sharp increase in 2023, relative to other years, was largely attributed to the unprecedented dengue outbreak. The collection in 2022 was 8797 units. Prior to this period, 2020 and 2021 were marked by reduced collection owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, when collection went below 5000 units in both years. Bill Gates says 3 things make people happy

Happiness is a precious asset of life, which everyone strives to achieve. However, it is not in everyone's destiny as some can be happy, some are not.

Live with the present

According to him, you can't be happy in life if you think about what happened in the past. So, get rid of the past and live with how you are now.

Listen to yourself

He said that one of the ways to be happy is to listen to yourself first. If you feel like you have something bigger to do in life, get up and do it later.

Stop drilling the brain

Earth is now an echo chamber, where all kinds of sounds coalesce and collide, creating what we call noise. In noise we live each moment, as it kills us in ways we don’t know. However, we just shrug off clatter of machines, deafening buzz of aircraft overhead or the babbling hoot of vehicles.

Even music today gets tiringly noisy, what with disharmony unfurling its hood at its heart. More than making us uneasy, noise pollution put us out on health front, leading to hearing loss, and other health conditions including increased heart rate, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, high blood pressure, migraine, disrupted sleep, muscle tension, poor cognitive function, impaired concentration and poor learning skills. The list might go endless. Exposure to deafening noise, even for a few minutes, could cause stress, anxiety, and emotional disorders.

There is no peace in the world, it seems. Each day our ears take in varying levels of noise—be it a rickety mixer or grinder at home, vehicles in the street, growl of machines at work place or even the muffled hum of an air conditioner, they all add to noise we listen to each day. Most people don’t know how harmful noise is, or they just take it for granted.

They think it is okay to be in the vicinity of a growling machine. The biggest health hazard from noise pollution is hearing loss.

The inner ear has a snail-shaped structure called cochlea, which is lined with numerous tiny hairs. These hairs move back and forth when sound enters the cochlea; they function well only in moderate sounds levels. When heavy sounds enter the ear, the tiny hairs get flattened and damaged, leading to hearing loss.

How much is too much noise? You may be asking. Sound is measured in decibels (dB), starting from zero indicating the quietest sound humans can hear.

One study has measured sounds in a quiet library at 30 dB, usual conversation takes place between 50-60dB, sound rate of busy traffic or a noisy restaurant might hover at 70 dB, and growl at factory may be at 80dB.

Remember your stereo head phones could be booming at 100 dB. Even brief exposure to more than 110dB could damage ears immediately. More than 85 dB sounds can damage ears over time. We have created a “sound hell” for animals as well. Increasing noise pollution affects animals mentally and physically. For example, intolerable noise levels, says a study, decrease milk production in cows, and in chicken it leads to major drop in egg production and stunted growth.

This is especially so in the case of underwater animals like whales and dolphins, who bear the brunt of heavy noise from submarines and ships.

It is time we tamped down noise we produce to a healthy level. Given today’s round-the-clock exposure to plugged-in music, increasing vehicle populations, and clatter of towns and cities, it is an ambitious task. Each of us can at least hone in on the noise we produce and try to manage things quietly, for silence is golden.Source: https://english.madhyamam.com

Don’t be so hard on yourself

During the quarantine, I had a moment where I broke down because of the want and need for everything to ...
Nikki Abraham,Nucleus Team Member, Positively Caviar, Inc. COURTESY PHOTO
  • During the quarantine, I had a moment where I broke down because of the want and need for everything to return to normal. In the midst of my tears, the reason for my sadness transitioned from the impact of the pandemic on my mental state to ultimately feeling badly about feeling bad. I still have a job, my health, and community while there are people dealing with illness and going without food, housing and employment so do I even really deserve to be unhappy about my situation? If you’re wondering, the answer is yes.
  • Through several conversations, I came to the realization that I’m not the only person struggling with navigating my feelings during this emotionally challenging time. It’s important for everyone to realize your emotions are valid. Having a moment of weakness does not make you weak it actually makes you human.
  • Acknowledging the moment and being in touch with your emotional state is the first step toward healing. Allow yourself, to feel everything and be present in all emotions. Then, also give yourself space to let those feelings go. Anxiety, uncertainty and frustration during this time, is completely normal and should be expected. However, the question is how you are dealing with this anxiety?
  • I find myself saying the Serenity Prayer daily: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” One thing you do have control over is your attitude. It’s important to be intentional about your resiliency. Once you have a negative thought don’t allow it to fester but instead, challenge negative thoughts with neutral and positive thoughts.
  • Now is also the perfect time to fully take advantage of your community. I learned that it is vital to have a support system whether they’re present virtually or in-person. Communication and expression of love is needed now more than ever. I also learned that it’s okay to speak about your thoughts and feelings and to ask for help. I’ve utilized online therapy services, which are available during this time if needed. I’ve also taken full advantage of communicating with my loved ones on videos apps like Facetime, Zoom, and House Party.
  • Over the past few weeks, I’ve come across tweets and Instagram posts with the intent to belittle others if they aren’t thriving during the pandemic or being productive in the sense of starting podcast, writing a new book, or learning a new language. If you happen to come across this content on social media do yourself a favor and keep scrolling as these posts negate the fact that all of our situations are different. Be cognizant of about whom you follow on social media being mindful that not all Instagram pages have your best interest at heart.
  • Processing the situation and figuring out how to sort your emotions takes time. Here’s a gentle reminder that you don’t have to have everything figured out. Being self-quarantined does not mean you have to become superhuman and you definitely don’t have to make the most out of a global pandemic.

Living in the Eternal Now, Wisdom Comes With Age

By Paul Ebeling: Successful older people’s ability to live long, and and be success at the things they poured their lives into during the years, came from their complete lack of desire to conform to anyone else’s needs or demands.

Notably: When we are young, there is a lot of peer pressure and some always feel that they are not doing as well as some other peer. When we are older … the expectation changes, expectations of other people and expectation of self, we accept ourself better.

With age comes a sense of balance, an “all things considered” approach that views being agreeable as not a betrayal of one’s personal code, but evidence of a greater understanding of what iss at stake and what’s truly important in life.

In Y 2016, Swarthmore College conducted a study in which researchers concluded that life experience should not be minimized as it sometimes is by younger people.

Science Daily declared, “With age comes wisdom, at least when it comes to knowing that things are not always as they appear.”

The researchers found that older people tend to assess the correct slope of a hill better than young adults simply because the former group has a greater set of life experiences to draw from.

More importantly, interpreting the slant of a slope may be a metaphor for all of life, the study authors conjectured: “Whereas much research on aging emphasizes perceptual decline, when it comes to space perception for navigation, older adults do well. And they also seem to have acquired wisdom with their years about the difference between how things seem and how things are. This is a point well worth making.”

In talking to younger relatives for their impressions of their elders’ personalities, characteristics and qualities, it’s telling that one younger relative in the study of Italian oldsters described her father as “a Dictator.”

My Father was a benevolent “Dictator”

We likely all know an elderly person who has not chosen to take the proverbial high road and instead chooses to look back on the landscapes of their lives with regrets of the past and anxiety for the future rather than focusing with gratitude and grace, both for themselves and for others in the Eternal Now.

That is why the researchers also encountered older people with a tendency to be domineering, inflexible and the ones in control.

It is easy to see how people with such a bent would find it particularly hard to face the changes that come with age, with their circumstances often dictated by a decrease in financial or physical freedom.

Some people call that survival skill “Stubbornness,” some others call it “True Grit.”

It is tough to be deferential in the face of hard times, like the loss of loved ones, lost jobs, unmet expectations and consequences of things that might not have gone quite as 1 planned or hoped, especially as old age is taking its inevitable toll.

“Old age ain’t no place for sissies”– Betty Davis

One of the most important things we can do in any situation is to look at the bright side, and that is probably more true with approaching older age as any other situation in life.

It is one thing to notice older people who are not handling it as well as we feel they could or should, but the bell tolls for us just as surely as it does for the archetypal “them.”

Time marches on.

There is something that’s both galvanizing and encouraging about viewing and living advanced age with an outlook that everything will be all right, no matter what happens.

That’s why a positive attitude may very well be worth its weight in Gold.

Studies suggest that how we approach the aging process can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you feel that because you have a certain number of candles on your Birthday Cake it means that iy is time to fade into insignificance and obscurity, you will do.

But, if you adopt a can-do, one-foot-in-front-of-the-other outlook on life with each new day, and are gratefull for it, the odds are you will live longer.

And, you will be happier and healthier along the way.

If you ever find yourself thinking “people my age should act or feel this way or that way,” resist it. Instead of allowing words and phrases like “cognitive decline,” “crotchety” or “feeble” to fill your thoughts of what “old age” looks like, focus on positive terms such as “knowledgeable,” “experienced” and “wise” instead.

A willingness to prolong life is dependent on being able to maintain their current state of health or what they might deem acceptable. The best way to do it is by making lifestyle choices that will help increase your potential for a long, healthy life.

The researchers in the study noticed in talking to the older people the connection was of great significance, and recognizing their own significance was fundamental for survival physical and emotional.

It is important to have connection, there to be at least 1 place to go where everybody knows your name.

In another study I read today, it reported that people who had positive rather than negative ideas about what aging looked like lived an average of 7.5 years longer than their more negative counterparts.

Variables like age, gender, socioeconomic status, loneliness and functional health notwithstanding, the will to live is powerfully suggestive, and more often than not, it’s about the love of friends and family.

It is one of the Key aspects of being able to live happily, even if it is not forever.

No matter how old we are, we need to know we are wanted, to feel at home, to look forward to seeing familiar faces and knowing they can freely share both stresses and joys, but such freedom is missed most ‘old people’ when they no longer have it.

Social support does not have to come from a hundred friends, no one really has more that 5, ideally it should be at least 2 good friends or relatives to fulfill the sense of belonging we all need.

5 Tips to Spring Clean Your Life

By Shayne Heffernan: The spring season not only signifies the start of rain showers, colorful flowers and more outdoor activities, it also brings a rise in spring cleaning. Shake off the cold weather blues and revisit the simple parts of everyday life that could use a cleanup.

From storing your winter essentials to cleaning up your whole family’s diet (including your furry friends), these tips can help infuse the spring-cleaning spirit into your busy lifestyle.

Tidy Up Your Space:
Spring cleaning starts by identifying what area to tackle first. Set yourself up for success by picking a small space, such as your pup’s abode. Clean his or her bowl, replenish old toys and freshen up the bed. Using a removable cover on the bed can help to keep the space tidy all-year long.

Store Away Winter Essentials
As the days get warmer and you start to break out your spring jackets, bulky coats and clothes may go unused. Declutter your closet by storing your winter essentials in bins and setting aside items to donate. This can help to make room for those bright spring clothes you’ve been waiting to wear.

Refresh Your Diet and Your Pup’s
Spring means that fresh fruits and vegetables are starting to come back into season. Spruce up your diet by reintroducing these items, as well as quality proteins like chicken or salmon. In addition, ingredients with sources of fiber, like sweet potatoes, can help fill you up without adding too many empty calories. These foods are not only good for your health, they’re also beneficial for your dog. In fact, these ingredients are often found in many high-quality pet foods such as the NUTRO™ WHOLESOME ESSENTIALS™ line of dry dog food. As part of the NUTRO. FEED CLEAN™ philosophy, these dog food recipes are made with real, recognizable ingredients, allowing you to share your healthy eating lifestyle with your pup.

For more information on NUTRO™, visit Nutro.com or Facebook.com/NUTROBrand.

Pay Attention to Hard to Reach Places
You may not realize how much dust collects on the top of your ceiling fan when it’s not running. Avoid circulating dust bunnies by giving ceiling fan blades a good brushing with a cloth or vacuum. In addition to keeping your home nice and neat, this can also help ease springtime allergies.

Dust Off Those Sneakers and Get Outside
With spring in full swing, freshen up your sneakers by throwing them into the washing machine (by themselves) and hanging them outside to dry. Once you’re ready to get moving, be sure to include your four-legged friend. Playing outside together can increase both of your activity levels and help you enjoy the warmer temperatures. Source: Live Trading News

Mind your business

Meditation can keep your emotional brain in check
Meditation can help tame your emotions even if you are not a mindful person, suggests a new study Mindfulness, a moment-by-moment awareness of one’s thoughts, feelings and sensations, has gained worldwide popularity as a way to promote health and well-being.

“Our findings not only demonstrate that meditation improves emotional health, but that people can acquire these benefits regardless of their ‘natural’ ability to be mindful,” said lead investigator Yanli Lin, a graduate student at the Michigan State University.

For the study, the team assessed 68 participants for mindfulness using a scientifically validated survey.

The participants were then randomly assigned to engage in an 18-minute audio-guided meditation or listen to a control presentation of how to learn a new language, before viewing negative pictures (such as a bloody corpse) while their brain activity was recorded.

The participants who meditated — they had varying levels of natural mindfulness — showed similar levels of “emotion regulatory” brain activity as people with high levels of natural mindfulness.

In other words, their emotional brains recovered quickly after viewing the troubling photos, essentially keeping their negative emotions in check, the researchers said. — IANS Source: http://www.tribuneindia.com/

    B positive... are you?

    Akansha Verma
Jasmine Singh: You can no longer tag them as a give-a-damn generation; just because they care two hoots about what the world (read distant relatives and neighbours) thinks of them. We are talking about youngsters who have the intent and courage to their voice, a generation that is young yet sensitive who care and show it through their acts, like donating blood. Here are these youngsters who have willingly gone ahead and donated blood, each time someone has requested them to do so, or each time they felt they needed to...Reasons, why not ask them. Five minutes of your time + 35ml of your blood: Colloquially, this young generation is known as the pizza-burger-fast car-fast lane types. But, not everyone falls in this bracket; there are those who think of others around them, pretty much always. Rahul Juneja, 23, has donated blood umpteen times. “Of course, more than five times,” he smiles, making it clear that he definitely meets the criteria we had mentioned— young blood donors who have donated blood more than 5-7 times! Rahul doesn’t spin a sob story or a heartfelt story to explain why he donates blood. “It will save someone’s life, is this not a reason enough to donate blood?” Like Rahul, Himank Singla, a resident of Panchkula-10, doesn’t see donating blood as an act of bravado. To this young gun, it is a mere duty, something each of us should be doing. So, does this mean no scepticism, no questions, just go ahead and donate blood? “Who said this,” Akansha Verma, a student of MCM DAV College, shrugs her shoulders. “I see blood donation as a duty as well, but this doesn’t mean I didn’t have my share of queries before getting into this act.” Akansha, who has donated blood on numerous occasions, at various camps, and whenever she has received a forward message regarding the need for a particular type of blood, wasn’t sure whether she could go ahead and get the needle pricked in her skin. “I was jittery for the first time, I had my eyes shut the entire time. I felt mentally and physically weak. But the following day when I woke up, it felt good. Some kind of ‘peace feeling’. I didn’t share the fact that I donated blood with anyone, yet I felt nice.” This made Akansha donate blood the next time, and the next time... “Almost seven times now,” she smiles. Some curious cases: These are youngsters who haven’t just walked away with a certificate of a successful blood donor from the site, they have first asked what good happens through this act. Many have also gone all the way to check where their precious drops of life go. Kanwar Rana, a student of law from Sector-45, was told by many friends that donating blood was a prestige thing. He laughs, “I was dumfounded when someone told me that it was cool to donate blood.” For Kanwar it was the thought that one day he or someone close to him may also need blood that made him donate blood many times. He adds, “The fact that my blood can someday somewhere save a life gives me immense peace.” As for the fear of needles and infection, Kanwar smiles. The same question gets a different response from Shweta Dogra, a regular blood donor. "It hurts, but it is worth the pain." jasmine@tribunemail.com. Source: http://www.tribuneindia.com/

Bonding hormone behind willingness to donate: Study

Bonding hormone behind willingness to donate: Study
Berlin: The degree to which people are willing to donate their money for social sustainability projects increases with their level of oxytocin, a new study has found. Scientists at the University of Bonn Hospital in Germany discovered that the willingness to donate increases with the quantity of this bonding hormone. The 'cuddle hormone' oxytocin strengthens social ties in persons newly in love, during sex and during breastfeeding, the level of this hormone is particularly high. "Earlier studies have found evidence that the messenger also promotes generosity," Rene Hurlemann, a professor at the hospital said. The scientists conducted experiments on 172 participants. Each subject received 10 euros and was able to decide whether he would keep the amount for himself or whether he wished to donate all or only part of it. There were two actual aid projects to choose from — one ecological project for rain forest reforestation in Congo and a social project to improve the livelihoods of the native inhabitants in the Congo region. Using saliva samples, the researchers tested the participants' oxytocin level during the study. Oxytocin appears to have no effect in the case of environmental projects. Whether there were high or low amounts of the body's own oxytocin did not change anything at all with regard to donation behaviour. In a second experiment, the researchers administered the bonding hormone to some of the test subjects via a nasal spray; the other test subjects received a placebo as control. "The pattern repeated itself — on average, the oxytocin group donated twice as much for social projects — 4.50 euros more on average - than did the untreated participants," said Nina Marsh, lead author of the study. The participants were given a catalogue of various foods and items of clothing. They could either select a conventionally produced version or choose the sustainable variant and indicate a price for these items that they would be willing to pay. One catalogue listed socially-conscious products which featured on good working conditions. The other catalogue targeted goods produced in an environmentally friendly way, for which emphasis was placed on maintaining biodiversity. The subjects each saw only one of the two catalogues. The group receiving oxytocin selected more products produced in a socially sustainable way than did the placebo participants. They were even willing to pay twice as much money than for conventional products. "The results show that subjects with low oxytocin levels tend to support environmental sustainability projects, since they donated an average of nearly half of their money for this purpose," Marsh said. The study was published in the Journal of Neuroscience. — PTI. Source: Article

    Amitabh sings for charity

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan was spotted singing in a Mumbai local train to raise money for cancer patients. The 73-year-old star accompanied Saurabh Nimbkar, who sings in the locals for raising money and even featured on the TV show Aaj Ki Raat Zindagi, hosted by the megastar himself. "Local from VT (Victoria Terminus) to Bhandup to support Saurabh, who sings in locals for charity to cancer... sang with him..." the Paa actor tweeted on Sunday night. Big B wrote on his blog that the money collected by Nimbkar is distributed to the "less fortunate cancer patients and their families in the city" and that this sudden appearance was to let him know that the "support runs even after he departs from the show (Aaj
Ki Raat Zindagi). "The idea is not to create a splash among the media, or to create credible content for them, or for the subsequent promotion of the show #AKRHZ... the idea is to let him know that he is not alone...that he is appreciated... that our support runs even after he departs from the show," he wrote. Big B's appearance came as a ‘surprise’ for Nimbkar and for those who ‘travel daily’ on the local train as the whole exercise was ‘executed without his knowledge’. —IANS. Source: ArticleSource: flickr.com

Athletes 'may benefit from vegetarian diet

ANI, Melbourne: Some athletes feel that a vegetarian diet improves their performance, it has been revealed. Ultra-marathoner Scott Jurek has detailed his astonishing runs of 160 kilometres or more fuelled by foods like quinoa porridge with almond milk in his new book ‘Eat and Run’. Jurek is convinced that making the switch from a diet big on barbecues, burgers and fries improved his performance - although he’s not sure whether it’s because of what he''s eating or what he’s leaving out, like trans fats and refined carbohydrates. “It’s a question that’s already been answered because so many athletes have shown that it can,” the Age quoted exercise physiologist Darren Morton as saying. “When it comes to high-end performance, a high carbohydrate intake is important for endurance events as well as for power and strength and this is what plants can provide,” Morton, a senior lecturer in health and exercise science at Avondale College of further Education in Lake Macquarie, said. As for the extra protein required for serious bodybuilding or strength most people use protein shakes based on whey or soy that are suitable for vegetarians anyway, he adds. Does a vegetarian diet have any added benefits for athletic performance? That’s still not clear, according to the Australian Institute for Sport, but Morton wonders if the extra plant foods might reduce the number of sick days that keep athletes away from training. Although regular moderate exercise is considered an immune system booster, some research suggests that the stress of strenuous training at an elite level can make athletes more susceptible to colds and flu. “It may be that a vegetarian diet is protective. If you eat a plant based diet you’re getting a lot of extra antioxidants from vegetables and fruit so perhaps you’re less likely to get sick so often and you can front up for training every day,” he said. Morton, a recreational triathlete who’s followed a diet that’s vegan – if you don’t count chocolate - for about four years. “What I’ve noticed is that I don’t get sick now, whereas before when I was doing high volume training I got a lot of colds,” he said. But if there’s a downside to vegetarian eating for athletes, especially vegan diets that skip dairy products and eggs too, it’s that plant foods tend to be low in kilojoules. “Athletes who train at a high level need to work at eating a lot of food in order to get enough kilojoules. “But for non-athletes that can be an advantage of a vegan diet – you can still eat more food and weigh less,” he added.
