He Beached an Old Cruise Ship and Turned it into $18 Million Beachfront Hotel with Love

released by Doulos Phos Ship Hotel

By Andy Corbley, Sep 02, 2025, It was the oldest passenger ship still floating: he turned it into an unforgettable terrestrial hotel experience.

Long since declared unseaworthy, the MV Doulos Phos is now the 5-star Doulos Phos Ship Hotel at the Bintan resort reclamation project in Indonesia.

But if you’re imagining the ship to be merely a prop, thank again. Her new owner, as nautically enthused as an interview with CNN demonstrated him to be, endeavored to keep intact every ounce of heritage that was possible to preserve, from the defunct engine room to the porthole windows.

“If I didn’t have this project, maybe I’d have a Ferrari and a Lamborghini at home, and I’d be sailing around the world every year with my family,” 74-year-old Eric Saw, a devout Christian Singaporean multi-millionaire, and the owner (captain, maybe?) of the boat and the hotel told CNN.

That project took 15 years and $18 million to complete, along with countless headaches and many inches of nails bitten down in anxiety. It was journey that barely holds a candle to the vessel’s long history.

It was 1914, just two years after Titanic sunk when SS Medina rolled off the shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. Over a career spanning 100 years, she transported agricultural goods, then military personnel during the First World War, then passengers again under the name SS Roma. In the mid-20th century, she swapped her steam engine for a diesel one, and her name (again) to MS Franca C. and set sail as a cruise liner.

Her final conversion came when she was purchased as a missionary vessel and floating library in 1977, and renamed the MV Doulos. She docked at over 100 countries, sailed hundreds of thousands of nautical miles, and was at one point the oldest operating passenger vessel on the seas.

But time ends all romances, and with a mountain of maintenance needs that no one would pay for, she was drydocked in Singapore to await bids for new ownership, 4 years shy of her 100th birthday.

Eric Saw already ran a three-story restaurant inside a Mississippi-style paddle steamer, and felt “a calling from god” to buy and repurpose the ship into a new line of work.

After three years of paying dock fees for the vessel, Saw zeroed in on a place of rest on Bintan island in Indonesia. He was offered 3 acres of reclaimed land; he requested that it form the shape of an anchor.

In October 2015, at 101 years-of-age, the newly-renamed MV Doulos Phos, or “servant of light” in Greek, embarked upon her final voyage from the island of Batam to Bintan. There she would rest upon a bed of concrete undergirded with piles extending 130 feet into the bedrock below the seabed.

Inside, the small crew and passenger cabins which were crammed and poorly lit were expanded, but some were left as-is for adventurous visitors. Elevators and fire escapes and other modern building requirements were installed to meet building codes and regs, along with modern electrical and plumbing.

released by Doulos Phos Ship Hotel

Yet every vestige of heritage possible to save was retained, including the four life boats, which still hang from chains along her midship, and tons of material including the original rivets which held her hull together as welding hadn’t been pioneered in shipbuilding in 1914.

Perhaps because he saw it as a mission from god, Saw takes a salary of $1.00 a year, while all operating profit is donated to charitable causes—a servant of the light, in name and nature. He Beached an Old Cruise Ship and Turned it into $18 Million Beachfront Hotel with Love

2,000-year-old Gold Jewelry from Mysterious Central Asian Culture Discovered in Kazakhstan

– credit Turkistan regional administration of Republic of Kazakhstan

Of the many famous empires and states along the Silk Road’s Central Asian passages, few are more mysterious than the Kangju.

But in a stroke of fortune, the section of an ancient burial ground reserved for the nobility of this kingdom escaped the attention of looters for over two millennia, and a recent excavation from a university in Kazakhstan has uncovered evidence of wealth and prestige.

The Kangju state ruled an area in southern Kazakhstan for almost 1,000 years between the 5th century BCE and the 4th century CE. Of the three tombs found in the rural Karaaspan district of Kazakhstan’s region of Turkistan, two had been looted in ancient times, but a third whose contents were still intact yielded these golden earrings, along with a bronze mirror, arrowheads, beads, and other items.

The earrings are a clear sign of the kingdom’s wealth, while the mirror reflects more on their social connections.

“Previously, similar mirrors were found in the city of Tillya Tepe in Afghanistan, the center of the Kushan Empire, and in the burial places of the Sarmatian kings in the Southern Urals,” a statement from the Kazakh government read after being translated.

Circular with a hole through the center, the mirror was made in the Han Dynasty, the first modern Chinese imperial empire, and the one which established the first Silk Road. Connecting the Han capital of Xi’an with Rome, Kangju would have been an important stop on the most famous trail in history.

The earrings are crescent-shaped and are assumed to represent the Moon in polychromatic gold with turquoise and rubies. At the bottom are bunches of grapes which along with being a lovely decoration also reflected the sunlight in different directions.

The two pieces almost certainly indicate the tomb belonged to a noble lady, the statement says.

Expedition leader Aleksandr Podushkin, an archaeologist at Ozbekali Zhanibekov University which conducted the excavations, says Kangju—itself a Chinese name—was made up of a variety of Central Asian steppe peoples who are all better known than the kingdom they lived in.
The bronze mirror from the Han Dynasty – credit Turkistan regional administration of Republic of Kazakhstan

The Sarmatians mentioned earlier from the regions of the Urals, Caucasus, and the Black Sea, the Xiongnu from northern China and the Tian Shan mountains, and the Saka people, who probably originated in Iran but eventually spread all throughout Central Asia and Siberia, would have each contributed to making Kangju a cosmopolitan center of Central Asian nomadic peoples.

A 2nd-century BCE historical text from the Han Chinese states that Kangju remained small for long periods, neither growing nor shrinking in wealth and influence. If this is the case, it was probably because several larger empires surrounded it, including the Xiongnu, the Parthians, and the Kushan Empire.2,000-year-old Gold Jewelry from Mysterious Central Asian Culture Discovered in Kazakhstan

18022_ELLE Contemporary Collection - Only at Kohl's!(CBPCIP), the first of its kind in the city. Mr. Feng Junke, who heads the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Press and Publication, the book store's supervisory agency, confirmed the news on Monday while attending the city's political consultative conference. Feng denied the recent rumor that Eslite Bookstore, a renowned Taiwanese bookstore chain which is also open 24 hours a day, will land in Beijing soon. "There is no such application yet," he said. The bookstore to open in CBPCIP is under Beijing Genuine & Profound Culture Development Co., Ltd., whose current bookstores only have daytime business hours. But the parent company has applied for a 24-hour license. Feng said his bureau will give financial and preferential policy support to 24-hour bookstores to see "whether the business model will stand the time trial," especially when online bookstores are chipping away their market shares. Both Hong Kong and Taiwan have successful 24-hour bookstores; Singapore's Page One bookstore has a presence in several countries and regions in Asia already. Also according to Feng, all bookstores in Beijing, not necessarily 24-hour ones, will receive support from the municipal government. Source: Beattie's Book Blog

Relaxations’ big on the big island of Hawaii

By: There are over 50 works of decorative theater art from the state and private collections of Russia and Indonesia. Some exhibits come from the State Museum of Oriental Art. “We really liked the idea of exhibiting Indonesian puppets and masks from our collection on the premises of the Museum of Decorative and Applied Art,” said deputy director of the State Museum of Oriental Art Tatiana Metaksa in her interview to the Voice of Russia. “It is wonderful when a museum dedicated to Russian art exhibits works from one of the beautiful Oriental countries.” The theatrical culture of Indonesia, which is one of the largest island countries in South East Asia, is practically unknown to the majority of Russian viewers. However, historically, theater performances became one of the main ingredients of the spiritual culture of the residents of the Malay Archipelago and the Islands of Java and Bali. The word “wayang”is used to denote both a theater performance and theater puppets. One of the main exhibits on show is a painting several meters wide that depicts episodes from a Javanese fairy tale about the adventures of the young knight Panji and his beloved princess Sekartadji. Such paintings are used for the performances of wayang
master  beber, during which –  the show accompanied by some music – tells Panji’s story by showing paintings that were wrapped around two vertical poles. It could be said that such performances in the past were the equivalent of today's cartoons. But they mostly remind one of a show of diapositive photography that was so popular in the 20th century. Today the art of wayang beber is almost extinct. Only two sets of ancient paintings dated around the 17th –18th centuries have survived to this day, and are considered to be sacred relics that possess magic powers. Performances that use these ancient paintings are held only during especially important ceremonies. The state of the paintings is quite poor, that is why about ten years ago their owners allowed them to be copied in order to preserve the unique heritage and let as many people as possible see them. One such work based on the scroll from the Javanese district of Pachitan is on show at the exhibition. Nonetheless, the exhibited work is still just a copy of the original scroll. Some details, the decoration of the background and the coloring of the canvas exhibited at the Museum of Decorative and Applied Art, are a product of the imagination of the artist who made the modern version. However, the composition as well as the basic artistic methods mirrors the original. According to Tatiana Metaksa, the good characters have “refined facial features: thin lips, thin noses, almond shaped eyes, while bad characters to the contrary are traditionally portrayed with thick red lips that are too big in size.” The story of Panji was also popular with the dancing drama show called wayang topeng, the masks from which are also exhibited at the museum. The actors themselves do not talk since they are holding the part of the puppet with their teeth that is attached to the inside of its mask. The show master tells the story for them. The only exclusion is the fool who wears the mask and makes the audience laugh. In 2003, UNESCO granted wayang world heritage status, thus acknowledging the importance of this type of theater.
