The New 7 Wonders of the World

The Pyramid at Chichén Itzá (before 800 A.D.) Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
MEXICO: Chichén Itzá, the most famous Mayan temple city, served as the political and economic center of the Mayan civilization. Its various structures - the pyramid of Kukulkan, the Temple of Chac Mool, the Hall of the Thousand Pillars, and the Playing Field of the Prisoners – can still be seen today and are demonstrative of an extraordinary commitment to architectural space and composition. The pyramid itself was the last, and arguably the greatest, of all Mayan temples.
Christ Redeemer (1931) Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
BRAZIL: This statue of Jesus stands some 38 meters tall, atop the Corcovado mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro. Designed by Brazilian Heitor da Silva Costa and created by French sculptor Paul Landowski, it is one of the world’s best-known monuments. The statue took five years to construct and was inaugurated on October 12, 1931. It has become a symbol of the city and of the warmth of the Brazilian people, who receive visitors with open arms.
The Roman Colosseum (70 - 82 A.D.) Rome, Italy
ITALY: This great amphitheater in the centre of Rome was built to give favors to successful legionnaires and to celebrate the glory of the Roman Empire. Its design concept still stands to this very day, and virtually every modern sports stadium some 2,000 years later still bears the irresistible imprint of the Colosseum's original design. Today, through films and history books, we are even more aware of the cruel fights and games that took place in this arena, all for the joy of the spectators.
The Taj Mahal (1630 A.D.) Agra, India
INDIA: This immense mausoleum was built on the orders of Shah Jahan, the fifth Muslim Mogul emperor, to honor the memory of his beloved late wife. Built out of white marble and standing in formally laid-out walled gardens, the Taj Mahal is regarded as the most perfect jewel of Muslim art in India. The emperor was consequently jailed and, it is said, could then only see the Taj Mahal out of his small cell window.
The Great Wall of China (220 B.C and 1368 - 1644 A.D.) China
CHINA: The Great Wall of China was built to link existing fortifications into a united defense system and better keep invading Mongol tribes out of China. It is the largest man-made monument ever to have been built and it is disputed that it is the only one visible from space. Many thousands of people must have given their lives to build this colossal construction.
Petra (9 B.C. - 40 A.D.), Jordan
JORDAN: On the edge of the Arabian Desert, Petra was the glittering capital of the Nabataean empire of King Aretas IV (9 B.C. to 40 A.D.). Masters of water technology, the Nabataeans provided their city with great tunnel constructions and water chambers. A theater, modelled on Greek-Roman prototypes, had space for an audience of 4,000. Today, the Palace Tombs of Petra, with the 42-meter-high Hellenistic temple facade on the El-Deir Monastery, are impressive examples of Middle Eastern culture.
Machu Picchu (1460-1470), Peru
PERU: In the 15th century, the Incan Emperor Pachacútec built a city in the clouds on the mountain known as Machu Picchu ("old mountain"). This extraordinary settlement lies halfway up the Andes Plateau, deep in the Amazon jungle and above the Urubamba River. It was probably abandoned by the Incas because of a smallpox outbreak and, after the Spanish defeated the Incan Empire, the city remained 'lost' for over three centuries. It was rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. Source: Article

Cadbury develop's non-melting chocolate

In a breakthrough that will be most welcome to chocoholics, British scientists have developed a new melt-proof recipe for the bitter-sweet cocoa bar, that would help it beat the summer heat in countries like Australia and India. The heat-friendly chocolate, developed by Cadbury at a plant near Birmingham, retains it solidity even under temperatures over 40C for more than three hours, according to the British newspaper The Mail on Sunday. The trick is it to tweak a step in the production called conching, when metal beads grind the ingredients together. Scientists have developed a way of breaking down sugar, which makes for the reduction of the amount of fat which attaches to the sweet particles. "We have found that it is possible to instil temperature-tolerant properties by refining the conched chocolate after the conching step," Cadbury wrote in its patent application for the new product. "Production of temperature-tolerant chocolate would allow production of chocolate-containing products more suitable for hot climates, particularly in less economically-developed countries where the supply chain is ill-equipped to handle temperature fluctuations." But the development has left not a few less than enthused. Critics claim the development would end up necessarily altering the flavour of chocolate. Tony Bilsborough, spokesman for Cadbury's owner Kraft Foods, said the melting point was what made the bar so attractive, as that was what released the flavour and if it melted at a higher temperature, it would take longer to melt in the mouth. British chocoholics would, however not be benefited by the discovery. The firm, taken over by American food group Kraft in 2010 in a bitterly-resisted £11.5-billion deal, insists the new recipe would be available only in countries with a hot climate, like India and Brazil. According to the firm, development of temperature-tolerant chocolate would allow production of chocolate-containing product more suitable for hot climates, particularly in less economically developed countries where the supply chain was ill-equipped to handle temperature fluctuations. The firm has been slammed for its decision not to sell the new bars in the UK as dealing another bitter blow for an iconic British brand. British MP Robert Halfon said Kraft promised British chocolate for British people when it took over Cadbury, but it seemed that while British people did all the innovating, the firm gave the best of British to people overseas. He added, it was incredibly disappointing. He said while the British invented the brand, now British workers were not being allowed to enjoy the chocolate of their labours. He said he would urge the company to reconsider this and allow British people to have same rights as chocolate-eaters in other countries. Felicity Loudon, a descendant of the founder of Cadbury, said Kraft being an American company, it was not surprising that it was leaving the British people out. Source: Domain-BImage: flickr.com

Samba time! Brazil’s Carnival erupts in an explosion of colour as millions thunder through the streets for the start of the five-day fiesta

Parade: Members of the Mancha Verde samba school at Sao Paulo's Sambadrome
Brazil's Carnival celebrations opened with a bang yesterday as hundreds of thousands took to the streets to enjoy the start of the country's famous parades and street parties. Korean popstar Psy, whose "Gangnam Style" single with its signature dance moves has made him a global phenomenon, performed to huge crowds in Salvador, Brazil's third-biggest city, last night. Other Brazilian and foreign celebrities, including US actress Megan Fox, are flying out to liven up the celebrations in Rio de Janeiro and

Rio alone is expected to attract 900,000 tourists and generate US$665 million for the local economy this year.
The different carnivals, which take place in Sao Paulo, Pernambuco, Minas Gerais as well as Rio and Salvador and numerous other cities, each showcase their own type of music such as samba, samba-reggae and funk samba. It began yesterday with the the mayor of Rio de Janeiro symbolically handing over the keys of the city to King Momo, the ceremonial figurehead of Brazil's best-known Carnival celebrations. But this year's festivities are taking place under the pall of the recent nightclub fire that killed 238 people in the southern city of Santa Maria. Sixty-five others are still hospitalised. Pierre Dukan, When you are in love you can live with only water

A man behind perfect shapes of Penelope Cruz and Jennifer Lopez – Pierre Dukan claims he has made 15 million women thin. His 4-stage diet is booming among the gourmets worldwide. The Voice of Russia caught up with the French slimming guru, as he is in Moscow to share his expertise. Dukan admitted he is not gastronomically sinless and is himself a follower of his diet – and even unveiled his preferences among the fair sex.
(1) Monsieur Dukan, what is your diet? Do you stick to any rules in eating? Are you following what your family eats? I do myself exactly what I said, but not to lose weight, to stabilize my weight. When I put on weight during vacation, during Christmas, for example, immediately after it I start the first phase of my diet – protein and vegetables. And in a few days everything is away. My son is 28, and my daughter is 24. For them it’s the same. Of course, they like everyone else eat sugar, but they have a pattern of dieting, that is correct. And if you have a basic pattern you can make exceptions. But you must have something solid, and then you are free, you can go everywhere. (2) And what is your favorite dish? My  preference is couscous. I love couscous. Well-done… that! Three-four times a year, but I love
that I love Moroccan one. Let’s talk about normal weight and beauty standards. They have changed – for example, in the 1960s, in the 1970s, the women used to be plumper, and it was considered to be beautiful. (3) What do you think about that? It depends on the country, on the civilization, on the culture, on the religion, but now, with the globalization – the planet is small now and with the communications growing it appears to be something standard. And you know how every star in the world looks like. They look similar. And models – the same. When I go to China or to Brazil, women want to be thin. But it’s not always good to be thin. It’s nice to have pulp. It’s not necessary that everyone is the same. We must have diversity. People like man tall or small, women large or thin. You must in the first place respect your nature and harmony. Sometimes it’s better for somebody to be pulpous, and sometimes it’s better for you to be thin. It  depends on your morphology, your bones and your charm. You can have better results of seduction with pulp, than being thin. Sometimes it’s not very good. (4) And what about you? What are your preferences? My preferences go to the women who are curved. I don’t like the model prototype – very, very thin, without contrast of shape. I love shapes on women, even on the face. That’s very nice. Every shape is in the nature. But it’s not good to have a dictatorship of the shape, because it’s very difficult. If you are not meant for that saying ‘you must be like that’ is a frustration. "(5) Have you ever received letters full of anger from some clients saying ‘I tried, but it didn’t help’? Any complains form dissatisfied clients about your diet? People are not dissatisfied. Sometimes they can’t do it because life is difficult, but they know that it comes from them, not from me. If you follow the diet, normally you lose weight. It’s not possible, it’s not normal. We have physiology, and if we respect physiology, we lose weight. And sometimes you feel guilty, by yourself, because you say ‘I can’t resist to an ice-cream’ etc. It depends on the life. If you have lots of stress, discomfort, difficulties, you can be tempted to make lapses. In France, we say: “If you are in love, you can live with only water.” It’s a proverb. And we don’t need anything else. We are full of satisfaction and fulfillment. Thank you, it was a pleasure talking to you. Thank you, it was a pleasure. Source: Voice of RussiaSource: flickr.com

Life's a beach for Prince Harry

harry boat 1 oct07
When a royal presence was needed at the women's beach volleyball finals, there was only one man for the job: step forward, Prince Harry. The party-loving 27-year-old is no stranger to Horse Guards Parade, where his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II's birthday is celebrated annually with a military pageant. But there were no scarlet tunics in sight this time – just plenty of tanned thighs, toned muscles and tight-fitting bikinis. Which scenario the army attack helicopter pilot prefers he has not let on. However, he certainly seemed in his element in the rocking 15,000-seater temporary Olympic venue, with its thumping dance music yesterday. Harry snuck in part-way through the first set of the bronze medal match, where Larissa Franca and Juliana Silva of Brazil beat China's Xue Chen and Zhang Xi of China by two sets to one. The prince, third in line to the throne, was there in his role as an ambassador for the Great Britain team. "If I knew that, I would have won the game," Zhang said His appearance got the Brazilian seal of approval. "I have to give a kiss to him, he is so nice! Today he has brought luck for us!," Juliana said Larissa added: "I didn't know he was here or I would have celebrated more! It's great that he's here and it's good to know that our sport is getting recognised." Dressed casually in a Team GB polo neck t-shirt with his shades in his hand, he sat next to British double gold medal-winning track cyclists Laura Trott and Jason Kenny. Former England football captain David Beckham also joined the party, and was quickly posing for pictures with fans. The atmosphere was pumping, with people on their feet dancing in the rows to the pounding beats and Mexican waves rolling round the stands. "The more noise the better! This isn't Wimbledon, darlings!" hollered the announcer. Harry was treated to several vibrant routines by the Horse Guards Parade Dance Crew, featuring 11 women in flowery bikinis, who saluted the stand he was in. Harry's fellow troops, on security duty, got their cameras out to fire off a few photos -- but this time of the prince rather than the athletes on the sand. And there was yet more star power for the all-US gold medal match, where Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings beat Jennifer Kessy and April Ross in straight sets to claim their third consecutive beach volleyball Olympic title. Horse Guards Parade is one of the most spectacular locations of the London 2012 Games, situated in the heart of British political power. Harry's Clarence House home is a five-minute walk away. Source: Indian Express

Gavin McKay: I'm Cuckoo for Coconut

By Gavin McKay: This year has undoubtedly been coconut's coming out year. That fruit can flavor, hydrate, cook, bake and shake like no other. Seriously, it went from a fatty, tropical, obscure D list ingredient, mainly bastardized as an artificial syrup in low brow Caribbean drinks to becoming the lean, healthy, everywhere A list of nutritionists and celebs. So what's the deal, why are people going cuckoo for coconut? Coconut has risen partially because of the current thinking in food, nutrition and fat loss that embraces healthy forms of fat that satiate and support body functions and looks for natural, lower glycemic liquids and foods that don't spike our blood sugar and store fat. While we are just catching the coconut wind the many health and healing benefits of coconut have been known in the tropics forever. Here are a few key benefits: (1) Coconut oil facilitates the absorption of key nutrients by the body. It helps the body absorb calcium and magnesium, necessary for the development of bones and teeth. (2) Coconut fats are medium-chain fatty acids, unlike modern vegetable oils like soybean, corn, and safflower oils which are made of long-chain fatty acids. Medium-chain fatty acids are more suited for energy use rather than fat storage and may help those who are trying to lose weight. (3) In a study that looked at the effect of medium-chain fatty acids on metabolism, it was found that these fats could increase the metabolic rate by up to 48 percent and for up to 24 hours. (4) Coconut oil can supply the
body with energy similar to blood glucose, but without having a negative impact on blood sugar and insulin levels. When you include coconut oil in a meal with carbohydrates, the carbs are broken down into glucose more slowly, so blood sugar levels remain steady even after you eat.(5) It has even been found to help prevent those addicted to nicotine. In walks the coconut, know for the unique flavor of its meaty inner walls that we soak in sugar and then shred on top of cakes, but less known for all the other innately healthy products derived from inside its hard exterior. It was the water inside the coconut that started it all. By now most people have come across and tried coconut water only to be surprised that it actually has a lighter flavor that doesn't taste at all like the strong coconut we are accustomed to. In Brazil and other such countries a coconut with a straw is common place as a thirst quenching beverage so some smart soul packaged it up and brought it to the masses in America to huge fanfare. When it came to
Fusion I was skeptical that it would pick up and sell given how many trendy drinks get created per year but this one grew  on me and stuck because first and foremost it is a single, natural ingredient drink rather than an artificially flavored, roided up and over marketed super drink. So here is the low down on the other products you may have never tried but should look for: Oil - with a light flavor and ability to sustain high heat this is ideal for cooking but don't expect a liquid at room temperature, it's a soft solid. Butter - it looks like the oil, but with much more coconut flavor and cannot take the heat so butter is just used to flavor your greens, fish, vegetables, salads, smoothies, etc. Milk (unsweetened) - this deliciously flavored liquid is like almond milk in that its calories are derived purely from fats unlike milk that is part sugar, but it has lower caloric density. It is a great alternative to avoid lactose or have less environmental impact than cow milk just make sure coconut milk is free of sugar or preservatives Crystals - the latest product to arrive on US shores is coconut crystals which are a lower glycemic alternative to sugar that can be used in baking, drinks, etc. Shredded (unsweetened) - the shredded soft white fruit we know and love is such a great way to add healthy fats to smoothies, coat fish, sprinkle on fruit or yogurt, etc. Flour - Many people are wheat intolerant or simply prefer alternatives to wheat flour and organic coconut flour is fiber from the coconut meat after the oil has been extracted. Coconut flour is high in protein and fiber and low in carbohydrates with a great texture and appealing sweetness from natural sugar making it great for baking. Source: Fusion Cross TrainingImage: flickr.com

Miss Universe China: A brainy beauty

China: Miss Universe China Luo Zilin captures hearts whether she smiles or not. Procrastination is Luo Zilin's "strength" and it has worked to her advantage. Looking back, the Miss China 2011 and the fourth runner-up of Miss Universe 2011 in Brazil is glad she took her own sweet time to think through before deciding to join the world's most watched beauty pageant. For someone "who would shilly-shally between vanilla-flavored ice cream and chocolate for hours", "her own sweet time" means several months until six hours before the flight took off to Beijing for the nationwide finals. "Although there was nothing to weigh against the month-long contest, I needed time to think before deciding. And, it turned out to be an ugly duckling-to-a black swan experience for me," says the 24-year-old Shanghai native. Luo is blessed with a perfectly-tanned skin, Angelina Jolie-like lips and an officially-taped height of 1.82 meters. The former model has been a frequent face on the catwalk for nine years. Despite that, the contest turned out to be a lot tougher than Luo could ever imagined. "I am glad I gave enough thought and did my homework before the contest. If I had missed the contest, it would have been the greatest regret of my life watching on television how other girls made it." Among the challenges Luo faced at the San Paulo finals in September 2011, were smiling and walking simultaneously, to competing with the other 80 contestants from around the world in answering the questions asked by the judges. "I always forget to smile because as a model, I can be or must be as cool as possible on stage. While for the contest, I had to hold my smile for two hours. But before that, I needed to find the most natural looking smile first," Luo says. No contestant from China has ever been crowned Miss Universe, since the contest kicked off in 1951. The best record was Zhuo Ling, also a Shanghai native, who was crowned second runner-up at the Miss Universe pageant in 2002. All eyes were on Luo in 2011 as her popularity rose, partly because of the explosion in social networking such as Sina Weibo and the successful media publicity arranged by Yue-Sai Kan. The latter, a famous Chinese-American television host and a beauty guru, was appointed the director of Miss Universe China, an annual national beauty pageant that selects China's representative to the Miss Universe pageant since 2002. A typical pre-contest training day for Luo starts with morning exercises at 5 am and the day does not end till midnight. The last few weeks were spent in New York, where Luo was coached by a galaxy of experts including five-year Miss Universe trainer Akiko Shimizu, who is also the author of Hello, Elegant; chief fashion stylist Lizzette Kattan, who used to be fashion director and editor-in-chief for Harper's Bazaar France; and make-up artist Yuko Takahashi, who has worked with pop divas Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Despite the punishing schedule, which included practicing how to answer 500 questions a day, Luo described those days as "sweet memories like an all girls' boarding school", although there were nasty occasions such as gossip and jealousies among the girls.  "Jealousy could also mean you are getting the attention and that you are a threat to others, which could be confidence-boosting," says Luo, adding that she has also learned to "hold a smile offstage, when faced with challenges."  Lu Kun, one of China's most celebrated and innovative fashion designers, when asked about his first impression of Zilin said: "It has to be her overwhelming height. Even when she is among a forest of models, Zilin stands out," he says. Having known each other for nearly a decade, Lu, a Shanghai-based designer who shot to stardom after his first fashion show in 2003 at the age of 23, has been a supportive partner of Luo on stage and also her close friend offstage.  "But a second meeting with her will make you forget all about her height, which is overshadowed by her high EQ (emotion quality) and her professionalism," says Lu. "Her becoming Miss China doesn't come as a surprise to me at all because success rewards girls as smart as her."  Staff from Kan's promotion team shared a similar view: "Luo is smart and diligent. 'Brainless beauty' can no longer walk that far in the global arena."  But Luo says she is fine with stereotypes like "beauty is only skin deep".  "There is nothing wrong with being beautiful and attracting attention with looks. If we use the attention the right way, like for charity, it is good," she adds, having been devoting much of her time, both during and after the contest, to helping others.  A brainless beauty she certainly is not. After handing over the crown to the Miss China of 2012, Luo says she will continue devoting her life to charity and hopes to start her own fashion accessory store - a plan she nurtured even before applying for the contest. Source: China.org.cn

Be nutty for good health

Chomping on nuts leads to higher levels of good cholesterol (Hdl, high-density lipoprotein) and lower levels of C-reactive protein, which can trigger chronic diseases including heart disease, said a new study. "One of the more interesting findings was the fact that tree nut consumers had lower body weight, as well as lower body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference compared to nonconsumers," said Carol O'Neil, professor at Louisiana State University Agricultural Centre, who led the study. The study looked at 13,292 men and women (over 19 years) participating in the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES), the Journal of the American College of Nutrition reported. Intake was from 24-hour recall data and tree nut consumers were defined as those who consumed a fourth of an ounce daily. Tree nuts comprise almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamias, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts, said a university statement. Nuts were also linked with a five percent lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome, a name for a group of risk factors that occur together and increase the risk for coronary artery disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. In addition, tree nut consumers had a lower prevalence of four risk factors for metabolic syndrome: abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high fasting glucose (blood sugar) levels and low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels.
