Building confidence & transforming people’s lives through Makeup

Independent Makeup Artist, Kelenuo Tepa, creating magic strokes on her clients through makeup.

Vishü Rita Krocha, Kohima, every typical Naga family, Kelenuo Tepa was also expected to appear for competitive examinations and secure a white-collar job. But even as a child, she was always fascinated by creative things like makeovers. Given her interest, she vividly remembers how people would often approach her for a glam up and also appreciate her works.

Having nurtured such a dream from a young age, she indulged herself in a lot of self-practice by watching videos and updating herself with the latest trends in the makeup industry. Although interestingly, she is a Commerce Graduate, her love for makeup never wavered. “During those days, I didn’t know that I could pursue a professional course in Makeup”, she related to The Morung Express.

Throughout her high school, she excelled in Mathematics, and pursuing Commerce seemed like the best choice. But as an independent makeup artist today, she said, “studying commerce has not gone to waste. It is helping me in the venture I have chosen.” In between her years of education, she would have brides and others approaching her to do their makeup, and when it became quite frequent, that was when she also started rediscovering her career path again.

“I felt that this could be God’s plan for my life. I would pray earnestly, asking God to show me a sign in my dream, and when He finally did, coupled with the motivation I received from various clients, I underwent a professional makeup artist class”, she recalled her journey into becoming a professional independent makeup artist.

Kelenuo Tepa is especially driven by the profound impact that makeup has on people, even as she expressed that, “it’s the thrill I feel when I use my talent to enhance a person’s natural beauty.” “I believe doing makeup is not just a job, but it is a powerful form of transforming people to feel beautiful and confident”, she underlined.

“Although I had been doing makeup all my life, I was very nervous to work with a celebrity like him. But I took it as an opportunity”, she recalled. Stating that he was friendly and made the process very comfortable, she also elatedly added, “he said he was very happy with the service and also took a photograph with me in memory of it.”

Glamming up the celebrity artist involved close to one hour prior to the event and touch-ups on the makeup throughout the day during breaks. The difference between men’s and women’s makeup is that men require a shorter duration while women’s makeup takes more time as it requires more detailing involving the hair, eye, etc., which is a long procedure, she further highlighted.

However, for both genders, she emphasised on achieving a natural finish and making it appear most natural. “Through my makeup, I want to bring out the best version of my clients, since makeup can be a powerful way for individuals to feel good about themselves and build their confidence”, she reiterated while also adding that, “my signature style would be the dewy makeup, which my clients mostly prefer.”

Her clients mostly include bridal makeovers, but it also extends to the fashion industry, where she works with models, pageants, and song artists for music videos, etc. Further highlighting that occasion makeup is cheaper as compared to bridal makeup, she expressed that, “the prices also change with the distance of location since I work as a freelancer. And my makeup services are open for bridal, groom, beauty pageants, parties, fashion industries, and to anyone who loves makeup.”

All pieces of fabric were manually coloured. The skirt had a woollen braided belt, which could as well change the length of the skirt by holding it either around the waist, or higher, under the breasts,” she added. Archeological detective work found that the dyes used in her skirt came from the Eastern Mediterranean or Iran - almost 2,000 miles from the Altai Mountains. Her fine silk shirts were of a Chinese design. Yet the silks themselves came either from Assam in India or south-eastern Asia. On top she wore a smart and stylish light fur kaftan-style coat. As with male clothing for the period, it had long narrow sleeves, shorter at the front “and a tail from behind” - possibly the world’s first tailcoat. She also wore above-the-knee white felt boots as protection against the fierce cold with temperatures dropping to as low as minus 35C. The Pazyryk clothing included light fabrics not best suited to the cold temperatures in which they lived, suggesting perhaps their looks were more important to them than simply being warm.’ It also meant running repairs were needed on clothing and other burial mounds on the plateau have yielded examples of darned trousers.’ “The real eye-opener for Dr Polosmak was the high and distinctive head wear,” the Siberian Times reported. The ‘crowning glory’ of the wig was a giant feather some 68.65 cm long, made from felt and covered with black woollen fabric, with a stick inside it to help it stand straight. Then there was a ‘cap’ for the wig - some 84cm tall. Why and how often do I need to wash makeup brushes and sponges?

These potentially hazardous contaminants can originate not only from the cosmetics themselves, but also from the very surface of our skin.

So, how can we keep things hygienic and avoid microbial growth on makeup brushes and sponges? Here’s what you need to know.

How do germs and fungi get in my brushes and sponges?

Germs and fungi can make their way into your makeup kit in lots of ways.

Ever flushed a toilet with the lid open with your makeup brushes nearby? There’s a good chance faecal particles have landed on them.

Perhaps a family member or housemate has used your eyeshadow brush when you weren’t looking, and transferred some microbes across in the process.

Bacteria that trigger a pimple outbreak can be easily transferred from the surface of your skin to a makeup brush or sponge.

And tiny little mites called Demodex mites, which have been linked to certain rashes and acne, live on your skin, as well, and so may end up in your sponge or brushes.

Bacterial contamination of lip cosmetics, in particular, can pose a risk of skin and eye infections (so keep that in mind if you use lip brushes). Lipsticks are frequently contaminated with bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Low-quality cosmetics are more likely to have higher and more diverse microbial growth compared to high-quality cosmetics.

Brushes exposed to sensitive areas like the eyes, mouth and nose are particularly susceptible to being potential sources of infection.

The range of conditions caused by these microorganisms includes:

  • abscesses

  • skin and soft tissue infections

  • skin lesions

  • rashes

  • and dermatitis.

In severe cases, infections can lead to invasion of the bloodstream or deep tissues.

Commercially available cosmetics contain varying amounts and types of preservatives aimed at inhibiting the growth of fungi and bacteria.

But when you apply makeup, different cosmetics with unique formulations of preservatives can become mixed. When a preservative meant for one product mixes with others, it might not work as well because they have different water amounts or pH levels.

So preservatives are not foolproof. We also need to observe good hygiene practices when it comes to brushes and other cosmetics applicators.

Keeping brushes clean

Start with the basics: never share makeup brushes or sponges. Everyone carries different microbes on their skin, so sharing brushes and sponges means you are also sharing germs and fungi.

If you need to share makeup, use something disposable to apply it, or make sure any shared brushes are washed and sterilised before the next person uses it.

Clean makeup brushes by washing with hot soapy water and rinsing thoroughly.

How often? Stick to a cleaning routine you can repeat with consistency (as opposed to a deep clean that is done annually). Once a week might be a good goal for some, while others may need to wash more regularly if they are heavy users of makeup.

Definitely wash straight away if someone else has used your brushes or sponges. And if you’ve had an eye infection such as conjunctivitis, ensure you clean applicators thoroughly after the infection has resolved.

You can use bactericidal soap, 70% ethanol or chlorhexidine solutions to wash. Just make sure you wash very thoroughly with hot water after, as some of these things can irritate your skin. (While some people online say alcohol can degrade brushes and sponges, opinion seems to be mixed; in general, most disinfectants are unlikely to cause significant corrosion.)

For some brushes, heating or steaming them and letting them dry may also be an effective sterilisation method once they are washed with detergent. Microwaving sponges isn’t a good idea because while the heat generated by a domestic microwave would kill microbes, it would need temperatures approaching 100°C for a decent period of time (at least several minutes). The heat could melt some parts of the sponge and hot materials could be a scalding hazard.

Once clean, ensure brushes and sponges are stored in a dry place away from water sources (and not near an open toilet).

If you’re having makeup applied professionally, brushes and applicators should be sterilised or changed from person to person.

Should I wash them with micellar water?

No.

Not only is this expensive, it’s unnecessary. The same benefits can be achieved with cheaper detergents or alcohol (just rinse brushes carefully afterwards).

Disinfection methods such as using bactericidal soap, 70% ethanol, or chlorhexidine are all very good at reducing the amount of microbes on your brushes and sponges.The Conversation

How Kar Yi L: Apply Blush, Bronzer, and Highlighter

By Kar Yi L: No, I did not get multicolored tribal tattoos all over my face. I just want to share how I normally apply bronzer, blush, and highlight! The diagram above should be self explanatory. The brown spots indicate areas where I apply bronzer, the pink is where I apply blush, and the cream is where I apply highlight. Easy, right?   If you have the right tools (i.e. brushes), applying makeup becomes a lot easier and the end result usually turns out better. My current face brush staples are the blush brush from Ecotools, the high definition angled blush brush from Walmart (made by Paris Presents), and the stippling and contour brushes from Real Techniques. The duo sided Essence of Beauty brush with the angled side with white hairs and the small contour side with black hairs is also very nice although I wish the hairs were a tiny but softer. A key tip to keep in mind, especially when applying blush and bronzer, is to build up the color gradually. I prefer to gently dab my brush into the product and tap off any excess powder before applying the brush to my face. That way, I can use as little product as possible on my face. It is better to build up color rather than to apply too much on the first swipe. It can be incredibly difficult to remove excess makeup that has already been blended into the skin. If I accidentally over apply, I simply use afluffy powder or kabuki brush to dust excess off the color. From my experience, blush is the most flattering when it is on the outermost region of your cheeks when you are looking straight ahead. Blush applied too close to the center of the face and near to the nose makes the skin seem red and irritated. I like to keep the center of my face bright and luminous so I avoid placing blush there. Similarly, highlight should be kept toward the sides of the face so that the inner part of your face does not appear shiny or oily. Don't feel the need to apply all three types of products all the time. In fact, I rarely wear bronzer, blush, and highlight altogether on any given day. Sometimes I'll opt for a bronzer and shimmery blush which acts as a highlighting product as well. On lazy days I might opt for just a blush or maybe nothing at all.
