Study decodes how females and males experience depression

(Photo: AI generated image/IANS)

New Delhi, (IANS) A team of Australian researchers has decoded important genetic differences in how females and males experience depression for the first time, an advance that could pave the way for more targeted intervention and treatments.

In the study, published in Nature Communications, scientists found that genetic factors contribute more to depression risk in females than in males.

The team from QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute discovered about twice as many genetic "flags" for depression in the DNA of females as they did in that of males.

"We already know that females are twice as likely to suffer from depression in their lifetime than males," said Dr. Brittany Mitchell, Senior Researcher at QIMR Berghofer's Genetic Epidemiology Lab.

"And we also know that depression looks very different from one person to another. Until now, there hasn't been much consistent research to explain why depression affects females and males differently, including the possible role of genetics," Mitchell added.

The team identified about 7,000 changes in the DNA that could cause depression in both sexes, and about a further 6,000 DNA changes (a total of 13,000) that could cause depression in females only.

Researcher Dr. Jodi Thomas said the study also pinpointed how depression could show up differently for females and males.

The team found that the genetic factors linked to depression overlap more with those associated with metabolic traits in females.

"We found some genetic differences that may help explain why females with depression more often experience metabolic symptoms, such as weight changes or altered energy levels."

For the largest global study of its kind, the scientists analysed DNA from hundreds of thousands of people with and without depression, including around 130,000 females and 65,000 males with depression.

The changes in DNA that the scientists have identified are genetic differences people are born with, not changes that happen because of life experiences.

Traditionally, most drug trials and therapies are tested on males, but Drs Mitchell and Thomas hope their work will also translate to a greater clinical understanding of female depression.

"Unpacking the shared and unique genetic factors in males and females gives us a clearer picture of what causes depression -- and opens the door to more personalized treatments," Dr. Thomas said. The findings highlight the importance of considering sex-specific genetic influences in studying depression and other health conditions. Man’s Best Friend Recognized as Dog of the Year For Saving Him from a Bear Attack

Craig Campbell and his Doberman named Night – Supplied, Craig Campbell

A Canadian dog-lover has gotten to learn all over again why they call the animal Man’s best friend after his own brave pooch deterred a bear attack.

On a familiar trail in Cochrane, near Calgary, Craig Campbell was on a walk with his dog, a 10-year-old Doberman named Night. It was a trail he had taken with Night several times, but the routine physical activity suddenly turned into a life or death situation.

There in the bushes, a grizzly sow with her 2 cubs had wandered into the woods sandwiched between farms. Even still, Campbell had his bear spray, but having it is only half the challenge; the other half is using it.

“I managed two thoughts,” Campbell recalled in an interview with CTV News. “First of all, I said to myself, ‘This can’t be happening.’ And then I realized I wasn’t going to get the bear spray out (in time) and I said to myself, ‘I’m about to die.’”

Just then, Night came from beside in a flash and put himself between man and bear. Towering 7 feet on its hind legs above the crouching, barking dog, it gave enough time for Campbell to arm himself, but by then the bear huffed and went back to her cubs.

An avid trainer, Campbell has for years been training Night in the German sport of Schutzhund, often used to train the breed and others like it as police dogs. He believes this is why Night ran at the bear when others might have ran away, tail between their legs as it were.

“He is a very brave dog,” Campbell said. “To have an animal that literally stood between me and death, there’s no better friend than that.”

The story won Night an award in Purina’s Animal Hall of Fame for 2025, Canada’s longest-running pet recognition award. Inductees receive a medallion, recognition at a ceremony in Toronto, and one year’s worth of free pet food.Despite the sports and the bravery, Campbell said Night is a playful dog too, loving few things more than jumping into a stream and watching minnows swim through his paws.

Men And Women Respond Differently To Stress

News Track India, Washington, Nov 7 (ANI): Men and women respond differently to the same level of stress, a new study has claimed. James Harnsberger and his team from the University of Florida, Gainesville, enrolled the study subjects from community or religious groups who were considered "committed", that is, strongly affiliated with a group identity. They were audio - visually recorded while
coached by the researchers to vocalize both truthful and deceptive statements with the threat from them that the recordings would be shown to fellow community members for judgment. In some conditions,
stress was also induced by the administration of electric shock at levels calibrated by the individual volunteer, while other stress responses were measured by pulse rate, skin conductance level, pulse rate, and two self - report scales  of perceived discomfort. The researchers found that the male and female subjects responded differently for the same level for stress, with men abiding by the "tough guy"
response."In male subjects, higher degrees of physiological arousal were under- reported - what you might call a 'tough guy' response," James Harnsberger, the lead researcher, said. "The results were a surprise. We had expected that higher stressors would prompt both increased physiological response and increased self-reported stress levels in all test subjects fairly uniformly for both men and women," he added. Bodyweight Exercise Program to Build Muscle and Lose Fat

Health & Fitness Solutions, By Michael Paladin, Bodyweight exercises are strength  training  exercises
My Photothat do not require weights for resistance. Your own body weight is enough resistance to build an amazing level of muscle, and bodyweight exercises are definitely challenging enough to chisel away any extra fat. If you want to build more muscle and burn more fat, then this bodyweight exercise workout program is for you. The 4 Basic Bodyweight Exercises: Pull-ups, Squats, Push-ups, Sit-ups These four exercises provide everything you need for a fit and functional body. You have a pull movement (pull-up), a squat movement, a push movement (push-up), and an abdominal movement (sit-ups). How This Bodyweight Exercise Program Works You will perform these four exercises as a circuit using a “pyramid” format. That means you will start on the bottom “level” of the pyramid and “climb” your way up it. Then when you hit the top, you’ll “climb” back down. Because four exercises are done consecutively on each level, you are getting a sufficient rest period for each exercise. Additionally, when you get to your top level on the pyramid and start to get fatigued, you start going down it, doing fewer repetitions per level (set). That means you can still keep good form and concentrate on doing the repetitions perfectly. Bodyweight Exercise Pyramid:

How to Do the Bodyweight Exercise Workout Program: Go to the column labeled "Levels." Think of each exercise at each level as a set. So, you start on level 1 and do 1 pull-up, then 5 squats, 3 push-ups, and 5 sit-up with no rest between the exercises. Then you go to level 2 and go across, then level 3, and so on until you get to level 10, or until you start to fatigue, and you feel like you won’t complete the next level of the pyramid. When this happens, you’re going to start going down the pyramid. For example, if you get to level 7 and feel like you just barely completed it, then you start going down the pyramid again, by going to level 6, then 5, 4, 3, etc. When you reach level 10, you will be doing 100 pull-ups, 500 squats, 300 push-ups, and 500 sit-ups, which should be completed in about 60 minutes. How to Determine Your Starting Level The simplest way to determine your starting level on this bodyweight exercise workout program is to just begin with level 1 and go up each level until you start to fatigue, and you feel that you won't complete the next level of the pyramid on any one of the four exercises. Then start going back down the pyramid. If you make all the repetitions, then that's your starting level. How to Progress on this Bodyweight Exercise Workout Program You are ready to progress on this bodyweight exercise workout program when you can complete all the repetitions at a particular level or half-level with perfect form without needing to pause or rest to complete any set. When you can do that, move to the next half-level, which only adds one set per exercise. If you went straight to level 6, you would be adding two sets, which is too much. For example, if you started at level 5, your maximum repetitions would be 5 pull-ups, 25 squats, 15 push-ups, and 25 sit-ups. Your next level is not level 6. It's doing level 5 twice. When you can complete all those sets, then you move to level 6.  Moving up a half-level every 2-4 weeks would be excellent progress if you do the program three times a week. Reaching level 7, which is just about one-half the maximum repetitions at level 10, would be a challenging goal to begin with.If you can follow simple instructions, then you can build a HEALTHY, HIGH-PERFORMANCE, ATTRACTIVE body in the comfort of your own home using ONLY bodyweight exercises. Identify a man from his body language

Body language plays an important role to hide and show the desires of any person. By gestures one can guess a personality of any human. The body language of man helps a woman to understand what a man wants from woman. What he feels for a woman. Here in this article we are giving some tips that help to women to understand what a man thinks about her: If a man is standing near you and watching you but when you watch him he starts to watch somewhere else and again starts to watch you when you are concentrating to some other work. It shows that he has an interest in you and wants to talk you. Eyebrow flash also gives a signal of his interest in you. While talking to you if his eyebrows rise up it means he has a keen interest in you. If he starts him blush and fluster it means he is trying to flirt you. One in Five Successful Couples have ‘Nothing in Common’ – Showing Opposites DO Attract

credit Tim Mossholder

Researchers have confirmed that opposites do, in fact, attract, as a study commissioned in front of the launch of a UK television show found that one in five couples admit they have nothing in common.

The study of 2,000 adults in a relationship found that 24% have totally different hobbies to their other half. But the differences don’t stop with pastimes.

One in six of the couples, or 14%, said their music taste couldn’t be further apart from their partner.

51% of the couples look very different in appearance, and say this is what sparked the attraction in the first place.

Looks, sense of style, and spoken accent are other common differentiators that initially caught their eyes and ears.

Overall, an eye-opening half of all those polled said these opposing relationships really work.

The study was commissioned by Sky Atlantic, to launch its new series The Lovers.

The data found couples are more likely to be closely aligned on what food they eat and what holidays they prefer to go on, than many other subjects like film taste or their jobs, but 22% of those polled admit they’ve made a conscious effort to change their interests, to match their partner.

Just over a third have clashed with their significant other when it comes to making decisions.

However a quarter of them believe couples who have opposing interests are more likely to stay together than those who do not, and 73% believe having different interests can lead to more diverse and enriching conversations in a relationship.

In today’s 24-hour media landscape, companies pour billions of dollars into making sure adults remain connected with their interests 24-7. Pages on social media sites can rake in ad revenue by doing nothing other than making memes targeted at people who are interested in certain TV shows, hobbies, sports teams, or lifestyles.

Outside social media, suggested products follow internet users wherever they go, constantly attempting to connect them with products that match their interests. All this can lead to an over-emphasis on the importance of cultural or habitual interests in relationships. When trying to make a relationship work, or simply to get one off the ground, it can sometimes just require looking at the person from a different perspective beyond that of whether they share your interests—what else is attractive about that person, how can you place that more toward the center of interactions. Love, lies, and emotional gaps

New Delhi, (IANSlife) For many decades, people have been fascinated and alarmed by infidelity, that disturbing breach of loyalty and commitment. The mechanics of infidelity take on an intriguing dimension in the context of relationships, particularly in a nation with a diverse and rich cultural heritage like India. Although several elements contribute to this complex phenomena, one important but frequently ignored catalyst emerges: Emotional separation.

To examine the online dating behaviours of Indians going through a midlife crisis, Gleeden, a discreet dating app in India, commissioned a thorough study from IPSOS, a renowned worldwide market research expert, in February 2023.

According to the survey, 33 per cent of respondents believe that one of the main factors contributing to infidelity is emotional separation, while 36 per cent of women and 32 per cent of men feel emotionally unfulfilled in their relationships. It is crucial to comprehend the complex facets of infidelity as relationships change and society evolves. Emotional remoteness, which is frequently downplayed by more evident reasons, can have a big negative impact on relationships. Recognising and addressing these emotional gaps could result in stronger collaborations in the Indian context.

According to the survey, the majority of them stated that they were emotionally unhappy in their marriages, and emotional disconnect was one of the factors contributing to infidelity.

The Mysterious Case of Emotional Disconnect

The potential for infidelity exists when there is an emotional detachment, which is the gradual or abrupt loss of emotional connection between spouses. Partners frequently drift emotionally apart as a result of the hectic modern lifestyle, changing societal conventions, and growing expectations on people. When it comes to communication, quality time spent together, or rising emotional gaps, this divergence may at first seem modest. 26 per cent of the population claim that they are partially happy in their relationship whereas 6 per cent from Ahmedabad, 4 per cent from Indore, 8 percent from Guwahati and 6 per cent from Patna claim that they are facing emotional disconnect from their partners.

The Enticement of Infidelity

Even though it is generally frowned upon, infidelity can be a seductive means of escape for those who are experiencing emotional emptiness. This is especially true in a society that is still developing free discourse on emotional discontent in partnerships. Tier 2 cities are feeling an emotional disconnect as compared to Tier 1 cities (1 percent from Kolkata, 1 per cent from Delhi, 0 per cent from Mumbai, 2 per cent from Bengaluru, where as 6 percent from Ahmedabad, 4 per cent from Indore, 8 per cent from Guwahati and 6 per cent from Patna). The attraction of finding emotional comfort, comprehension, and approval outside the primary connection can be potent in such a situation.

“The preservation of social and familial ties holds great significance in the deeply traditional Indian civilisation. However, under these structures, personal goals and emotional needs can occasionally take a backseat. This creates circumstances where people, particularly women, may look for emotional fulfilment in relationships other than their primary ones. Women are frequently expected by culture to take care of others, which leaves them with few opportunities for emotional expression and personal development,” says Sybil Shiddell, Country Manager, Gleeden, India.

Emotional Infidelity in the Digital Age:

According to the survey, more females are left emotionally unsatisfied as compared to males (36 per cent of females and 32 per cent of males). The emergence of the digital age has altered the nature of relationships, allowing for the development of emotional ties beyond geographic boundaries. Online communities, messaging services, and social media sites provide avenues for people to create emotional connections with others outside of romantic partnerships, which can occasionally lead to infidelity. The strength of the emotional bonds formed through these platforms can be on par with those formed physically, illustrating how technology can amplify emotional isolation.

Putting the Flame Back in the Fire: Resolving Emotional Disconnect

Rethinking how relationships are fostered is prompted by the realisation that emotional distance may be a sign of impending infidelity. A crucial first step is to have open conversation about emotional needs, expectations, and objectives. To keep emotional closeness as a cornerstone of their relationship, both partners must consciously work to comprehend each other's emotional landscapes.

By placing emotional connection at the core of relationships, individuals can make an effort to bridge these gaps, develop trust, and eventually overcome the allure of infidelity. Love, lies, and emotional gaps | MorungExpress | morungexpress.com

Watch the Moment a Dad From Public Housing Wins Stunning Home Worth 2.5 Million in Charity Drawing

OMAZE home winners

A dad who grew up in public housing has won a stunning home worth 2.5 million in a prize drawing that raised over three million for charity.

Chris Milnes scooped up the magnificent 5,000-sq-ft home after entering the latest Omaze charity drawing without telling his wife and kids.

The thrilled 60-year-old who lives with his wife Jules in West Yorkshire, England, also received a cash prize of £100,000 tax free.

“When I got the call from Omaze to say I’d won something, I thought wow, a couple of grand would go down a treat at the minute,” said the father of three. “I never imagined that I might’ve won a house worth more than a couple of million—it’s crazy!”

“I spent much of my childhood living in a council flat in Leeds. Things like this don’t happen to people like me.”

Chris now plans to sell the luxury home in Dorset, so he can give his children “the start in life I never had”.
OMAZE home in Dorset with Chris and Jules celebrating

“It was a massive surprise to me—but an even bigger one for my wife as she had no idea I’d even entered. To say she was shocked is a bit of an understatement, she was utterly speechless.” (Watch the moment Chris was surprised in a video below…)

Chris had recently talked with his wife about downsizing, but they have now put their financial worries behind them.

“We currently live in a rented house, and only last week were discussing having to downsize to help keep our living costs down.

“We’ve worked hard all our lives and we’ve had to manage some challenging times over the years—but now everything has changed.

The salesman plans to spend a ‘big holiday’ with his family in the three-tiered home, before putting it on the market later this year.

OMAZE home in Dorset

The o-mazing 3-tiered home features a kitchen that opens onto a hardwood deck, spa-like bathrooms attached to each of the four bedrooms, and a cinema room. The rainforest-inspired garden also has a hot tub and outdoor shower.

Even though the drawing was open only to UK residents—with tickets starting at just £10—the contest raised a whopping £3,150,000 for BBC Children in Need.

And it was “a lovely coincidence” that when they won, Chris and Jules were living in a town called Pudsey, because the face of the BBC charity is Pudsey Bear.

With this and previous home raffles across the UK, Omaze has raised over £43 million for a variety of good causes. Worldwide, Omaze has raised $170 million by raffling luxury cars, campers, homes—and even lunch dates with celebrities or presidents.

Omaze gives people the chance to win amazing houses, like this beautiful house in Dorset, whilst also introducing charities to vast new audiences that they wouldn’t otherwise reach,” explained James Oakes, Chief International Officer at Omaze. “It’s a real win-win for both charities and entrants.”

If they did decide to rent it out, it’s estimated the property could achieve a long-term rental value between £5,000-6,000 per month, but instead the couple will buy a new smaller home together in Yorkshire, knowing the contest has changed their family’s lives forever.

“Not only will we be able to afford a new house for us, but we can also get all our children on the property ladder now. It means so much to be able to give them the start we never had.“My son lives in Australia and we’ve only seen him once in the past 6 years – now we can go and see him whenever we want and fly them all over in style too—it’s just bonkers!”Watch the Moment a Dad From Public Housing Wins Stunning Home Worth 2.5 Million in Charity Drawing

Men at higher risk of 2nd heart attack than women: Study

The number of deaths from heart attacks is not less than the number of normal deaths around the world. On the contrary, the average is too much. There could be many reasons for this. Many other diseases can lead to heart attacks. However, research says that men are at most risk in this case.

According to US Researchers, women are less likely to have a 2nd heart attack than men. The study was done on 1.4 million people from 2008 to 2017, showing that “the surviving female patients from death risk is relatively low”.

It has been found that within 12 months of recovering from the first heart attack, the follow-up heart attack has been reduced from 89.2% to 72.3% for every 1,000 women – where the follow-up heart attack has been reduced from 94.2% to 81.3% for male patients.

London-based physician San Peters thinks that a second heart attack can be prevented if the patient follows the doctor’s instructions properly. “Men and women can have a heart attack at any time. More analysis is needed to know about this. This research will help to understand this better,” she said regarding the study.

Physicians call a heart attack a Medicosis Myocardial Infarction. The heart has two blood vessels. One is the right coronary artery and the other is the left coronary artery. If fat accumulates in these blood vessels for any reason, it is called plaque or block. If blood clots form on that block, it becomes a complete block. The condition occurs only when it is 100 percent blocked, resulting in chest pain or sudden death. This is called a heart attack.People who smoke or have high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol levels in the body or those in the family who have heart problems – are more likely to have a heart attack. Obesity and unhealthy eating habits also cause more heart problems due to vascular blockage. Source:https://www.daily-bangladesh.com

Bald men more dominant and attractive to women

People think falling hair makes anyone more aged than real. As a result, everyone tried their best to hold the hair of the head. But a new study says men with bald heads are more attractive to women. In addition, bald-headed men are more confident and influential personalities to women.

The study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States asked students to observe pictures of several men. There were also several bald-headed men in the picture.

The images were evaluated on three criteria; how attractive the male characters in the photo were, how confident they seem, and who seems to be the most influential character. After the assessment, it has been seen that bald-headed men got higher marks in all three categories.

However, the report also provided sad indications for bald-headed men as the study found that bald-headed men seem to be older. In this case, the average age of bald men seems to be four years older than men having hair. Source: https://www.daily-bangladesh.com

The spoken word

Men are from Mars and women from Venus...indeed
.Men are from Mars and Women from Venus has been proved, finally! A computational analysis of the words used by over 65,000 consenting Facebook users in some 10 million messages revealed that women use language that is warmer and more agreeable than men. Some of the most commonly words used by women include wonderful, happy, birthday, daughter, baby, excited and thankful. Some of the words most commonly cited by men are freedom, liberty, win, lose, battle and enemy. Analysed by psychologists and computer scientists from Stony Brook University, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Melbourne in Australia, the study found that additionally, algorithms of language use predicted one’s gender on Facebook 90 percent of the time. The findings suggest gender influences the way people express themselves on Facebook.“Looking at language in social media offers a fresh perspective on understanding gender differences,” said H Andrew Schwartz, assistant professor of computer science at Stony Brook University. — IANS. Source: http://www.tribuneindia.com

Dress to impress

Age Correspondent: Stepping into the big bad world not just demands a change in attitude, but also a fashion makeover. Too many young men start their professional lives without a clue on how to dress. Yet, as future leaders and decision makers of the society, dressing smart is the first step towards becoming a professional. Apart from boosting your own confidence, it can also help you influence others. Irrespective of where you work, crisp, clean, and well-fitted clothing encourages others to take you more seriously. Making the transition from college to work wardrobe can be tricky. So stylist Nikhil Joshi lists out some essential tips to help you make the right impression:
  • Classic footwear: The old adage that goes ‘you can judge a man by his shoes’ holds relevance till date. Appropriate-fitting footwear is the first step to dressing sharp. Invest a significant amount of money for well-made, classic footwear. The price of well-crafted shoes may come as a shocker, but the quality and comfort are enough compensation. A good pair of leather dress shoes will last you years and stay good-looking with nothing more than some light cleaning and the occasional shine.
  • Dress to look mature: If you’re still wearing clothes that shout ‘college boy’, you’re going to be treated like one. Tweak your look a little and get the respect you deserve from older people. Try and replace the majority of your ultra-casual clothes: T-shirts, cargo pants, jean shorts, sweatshirts and sweatpants, with clothes that announce your maturity. Look beyond denim and go for well cut and classically styled trousers that will make you look a little sharper at social occasions than jeans. They’re less common in a young crowd, so you’ll already be standing out. You can also get wool or cotton trousers much lighter than blue jeans, which is a blessing in any kind of warm weather. Good polos in simple, dark colours are always presentable and flattering as compared to baggy T shirts that make you look sloppy. You can also opt for buttoned short-sleeved shirts in the summer.
  • Build from white and blue shirts: White and light blue cotton dress shirts are irreplaceable essentials in a sharp wardrobe. Both the colours look good on most complexions and body types. Patterns can liven up the basic white and blue colour palette, and there’s nothing wrong with branching out into other colours once you’ve got a hang of your style.
  • Suit up: No matter what your job is, you’re going to need a decent suit at some point. If your job requires you to wear one regularly you should look for a variety of hues and styles; if you just need a single suit for rare dress occasions stick to a classic single-breasted, two-button suit in charcoal gray or navy blue. Also, make it a point to have your suit well-fitted. Source: The Asian Age

The avowed objectives include focusing on men’s health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting male role models. Apparently, it is also an occasion to highlight discrimination against men and boys and to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to community, family, marriage, and childcare. However, in the run up to the 16th International Men’s Day globally and eighth in India, it is baffling that many are not even aware of November 19th being IMD, even in the digital era. Lesser known than its female equivalent, International Men’s Day is celebrated in more than 70 countries across the world and apparently has a history dating to 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago where it was first celebrated. However, unlike certain other countries where the mainstream media and government bodies promote the need to address men’s issues and organise events to debate and discuss manhood, the scene isn’t the same in India. Rahul Kumar, a Kochi-based software engineer says, “I didn’t know that there was an International Men’s Day till recently. But I think that it is a great idea. Because, either intentionally or otherwise, we as a society tend to underplay issues faced by men. We have preconceived notions and unwritten rules that make it more difficult for men to talk about depression or violence against them. A day to address such issues could indeed make a major difference.” The common refrain by critics is, ‘Every day is a man’s day, why do you need a special day for men’. But many think this approach only helps push men’s issues under the carpet. Krishnaprasad, who is a member of a group that celebrates International Men’s Day through discussions and activities, says, “We address issues that affect men and boys all over the world such as men’s shorter life expectancy, the high male suicide rate, our collective tolerance of violence against men and boys, and the struggles that boys face in getting good education and the unique challenges of father-child relationships.” While opinions remain divided about the need for a day to celebrate manhood, a large section of the feminists, says the core of feminism in its true sense is equality and hence it’s only fair to have an IMD. Radhika Vashisht, a motivation tutor and self-confessed feminist, says, “As a feminist and advocate of the idea that men and women should be treated equally, why shouldn’t men have their own day? There are really important issues when it comes to men’s rights. Celebrating IMD could be instrumental towards making men and women more equal in all spheres of our daily lives. This doesn’t belittle the deep injustice many women are subjected to or the ‘casual’ day-to-day sexism that defeats them at every hurdle. If anything, debating the discrimination against men simply underlines how much worse it is for women.”Source: The Asian AgeImage: flickr.com

Would you wear a giant animal tail in the name of fashion?

If you happen to spot a giant squirrel tail coming out of someone's jeans in the near future, fear not. She isn't a mutant. She's a trendsetter. Japanese street wear retailer “Kigu” is bringing life-sized animal and dinosaur tails to the masses. TellTails are a new line of wearable animal tails sold in the U.K. and by Kigu. Adventurous dressers can choose from a variety of hyper-realistic tails in models such as Lizard, Squirrel, Dinosaur, Lion, Lemur and Fox. Or rather, they could, before many of the models sold out. "We believe that everyone has a tail in them just waiting to be wagged, a residual longing not quite expelled from the evolutionary process," referencing the theories of Charles Darwin in their explanation” and become purveyors of the finest handmade tails for Bipeds."Source: Sam Daily Times

Getting to Know Mister Denmark 2014, Nicklas Pedersen

NICKLAS PEDERSEN, 23, was selected by the Miss & Mister of Denmark Organization as Denmark's representative to Mr. World 2014 competition scheduled to be held at The Riviera International Conference Centre, Torbay, Devon, England on June 15. Critical Beauty is grateful to Nicklas and to his national director, Lisa Lents, for allowing this e-mail interview.  How does it feel to represent Denmark in Mr. World 2014?: I would lie if I told you that it doesn’t feel absolutely amazing, because it definitely does! I’m extremely honoured and very proud to represent my country in a massive beauty pageant like this. It doesn’t get much bigger than this!! I’m so excited! You have been living in Australia for two years and you speak with an Australian accent? Do you feel more Aussie than Danish, or do you feel equally Aussie and Danish at the same time? It’s a bit funny because I actually don’t speak with an Australian accent. I have got family from New York and they used to spend summer holidays in Denmark when I was a kid. So while they were staying here, they taught me English and from there I adapted an American accent. But even now it’s not even American either. During my time in Australia I have become friends with people from all over the world and now it’s all just a big mixture of accents from around the world. It’s always a big mystery when people try to pick where I am from. I definitely feel Danish. I grew up in Denmark with Danish values and Danish traditions so I would say I’m still as Danish as it gets. Even though I don’t live there at the moment, Denmark will always be my number one and that’s where I want to settle down one day. What is the best thing you like about living in Australia? And what is the best thing about living in Denmark? Oh, that’s a hard one. But I reckon that the best thing about Australia would have to be the weather. I have always loved summer and being in the sun and just being able to be outdoors. Best thing about Denmark? It has to be the pastries. Haha! :) The best thing has to be that we are the happiest people in the world. We have a lot of benefits. Education is completely free, so is the medical system and the fact that if you lose your job, the government will support you with a decent income for up to two years if you are still unemployed. And then of course our cycling culture. We love our bikes and would rather jump on the bike than use our car. What makes you laugh? What makes you cry? I absolutely love to walk down memory lane and talk about all the silly and unforgettable things I have done with family and friends. Even
though I am still young, I have traveled quite a fair bit and experienced some amazing things I wouldn’t change for a thing.  You only live once, so it’s about making the best of it. There is nothing better than catching up with people and reliving the moments that made you laugh and made you the person, you are today. That always makes me smile and truly brightens my day. Unfortunately life is full of ups and downs. Something that has always had a great impact on me, is when you hear of people losing a friend or a relative. Nothing hurts more than when people pass away, often too early and the thought of never seeing them again is truly devastating. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I remember when I was a kid I always used to watch movies and admire police officers for being brave and for their heroic actions. So I thought being a policeman and saving the world would be the coolest thing ever. When I got older and realized it wasn’t all about playing cops and robbers, I decided to go down another path. What are your strengths and weaknesses? I consider myself quite the optimist. I am always happy and look at the bright side of life. I am a winner and won’t give up until I have reached my goal. And combined I have managed to come a long way. I believe that if you want something bad enough, you can always find a way to succeed. When it comes to weaknesses, I would have to admit that I can be very lazy with some things. I attend to postpone things that don't interest me or leave things until the last minute. I am possibly the most indecisive person in the world. I could walk into Blockbuster to rent a movie but come out
empty handed because there would be too many good ones to choose. If you were to come back as an animal in the next life, what would you be and why? If I had to choose one I would probably say as a dolphin. It is a beautiful animal that likes to play and when interacting with humans, they come across very friendly. I love to swim and have always loved the ocean. True or False: People who are attractive tend to be more successful. I wouldn’t say it is true but not false either. In today’s world being attractive can make things easier for some people. With that being said, if you don’t have the personality and brains to back you up, you are not better/more successful than the not-so-attractive person. There are obviously some industries, which are purely based on looks like modelling, but most of the industries in today’s world rely on skills and talent.  Many times we hear older generations comment on how younger generations lack motivation, passion, drive or respect. Do you think there is any truth to this or is it all nostalgia? That is so true. I think we have all heard our grand parents telling stories from when they were young and acknowledges that things were very different back then. My mom works at a school and often talks about how disrespectful kids are these days. Especially the language has changed with smaller kids using the F word daily. If that happened 40 years ago, you would
have been sent home, but these days people barely even notice.  Describe three things that you would never do to someone you love. One thing is for sure. I would never commit infidelity. It’s unacceptable and shouldn’t occur at all. I would never let money become a conflict or issue with someone I love. Honesty is very important. I am a terrible liar and people can usually see when I am trying to lie. I can’t hold a straight face and usually start laughing.  If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why? I would say that I wish I didn’t bite my nails. It’s the worst habit and it doesn’t look nice. I have actually decided that after my crowning as Mr. World Denmark 2014, I will stop! So hopefully I will be able to quit completely. If Playgirl offered you a million dollars to pose totally nude, would you do it? No, I wouldn’t pose totally nude. I can imagine how hard it would be to turn down a million dollars if you got the offer, but money isn’t everything for me, so posing nude would be taking it too far for my personal opinion.
Would you date an individual that you did not think was attractive? I think I would. I have met women before whom I didn’t find physically attractive, but when I got to know them and witnessed how amazing their personalities were and suddenly everything about them became beautiful. If you could change one thing about your past, what would it be? I probably wanted to change the fact that I was quite stubborn when I was a kid. I was very difficult and never did as I was told. I didn’t want to go to bed at night and didn’t want to wear any other clothes than gym wear. I was very picky about food and didn’t want to eat anything. I literally lived on Nutella on toast. When thinking back I must have been a nightmare. How would you describe your ideal vacation? I love to travel and have a lot of things and places to see on my bucket list. From trekking in South America to living it up in Vegas. But the most ideal one would be with friends and family in an amazing luxury resort in the Maldives. I have always wanted to lie in a hammock on the beach between two palms, just like you see in the movies. What are your plans for the future? I would like to remain in Australia if possible. I enjoy living here and I have built a life here now. But with that being said you never know what’s going to happen. I am extremely excited about representing Denmark at Mr.World 2014 and to see if that could open any doors for me. I don’t expect anything and I’m just going to do my best and see how it goes. Otherwise I still dream about travelling in South America and the U.S. How are you preparing yourself for Mr. World 2014? After being crowned as Mr. World Denmark 2014, I have started a healthy diet and serious training. I have been looking at the previous Mr.World competitions and discovered that
fitness and physical obstacles are a big part of it. I am doing my best to obtain the best shape so I can bring Denmark to the top. Why do you want to be Mr. World 2014? To win Mr. World 2014 would be a massive achievement. Not just for me but for Denmark as well. Male beauty pageants are not common in Denmark so winning a title like this on the world stage and being able to put Denmark on the world map would mean the world to me! I love to travel and experience different cultures. So being able to do that, as Mr. World 2014 along with doing great things around the world would be the
greatest experience. To volunteer, help people and make a difference in the world is something that would make any human being proud.
